37-39 Water Pumps
Could someone please tell me how much end float the pulley/impellor shaft should have on a correctly assembled, good condition, original 37-39 water pump? (Half inch diameter pulley/impellor shaft with the bronze bush)
Is 3mm end float good or bad? Last edited by FlatheadEric; 05-31-2021 at 01:14 AM. |

Re: 37-39 Water Pumps
The pulley moves forward about 3/16" when engine RPM's are increased on
pumps with spring loaded seals. With engine off you should be able to move the pulley forward towards the radiator 3/16" it should spring back every time you release it. There are also pumps that the bearing is made on the shaft that stay in a fixed position and that pulley don't move forward. I prefer the ones that move. G.M.

Re: 37-39 Water Pumps
Thanks G.M.
That is what both pumps do. I can move them both forward 3-4mm (3/16") and they return when I release them. I just received these pumps and on installing them I found that the left hand pump is dripping water so it looks like a new seal is required. |

If the leaking one pulls forward and springs back, it might be ok after putting a few miles on it.

running at a fast idle take a small piece of wood and move the pulley forward and push it back against the seal. G.M.

is not getting squeezed tight and the leak looks like the seal is leaking. If I recall the bolts are 7/8" long. G.M.
