Oil line location 41 Ford

Hi guys looking to install a beehive oil filter on the firewall , my oil line runs from the filter to behind and underneath of the distributor.. is this a modification by the previous owner and where would it go into in that location. Also what connections are these and what type of hose is this? Thanks for any responses much appreciated

The oil return on your '41 runs to an original stock location for your year Ford. The distributor mounting bolt is hollow, and a banjo fitting is installed at that location. I would take care to preserve that setup, a valuable much sought after item. I'm not sure about the hose itself, it might be a modern replacement.

Actually, the '41 return line runs to a fitting on the left side of the oil pan.
The fitting is integral of the pan and is located near the front.
The routing you have is kinda / sorta the late '40 routing.
The hose you have is a replacement and while it may be terminating at the timing cover, it is not routed correctly even for a '40.

That’s what I was thinking as well.. why would one route it that way? Are there benefits at all? I have great oil pressure and it’s never been an issue. Where is it exactly going into?

The return line of that type dumps oil onto the timing gears to drain back into the pan

Alan, it was supposed to be job #1 but who knows what actually happened.
I'm guessing you'd seen this "odd" pan that I believe was only '41.
There is a single "fitting" about 8" from the front of the pan on the left side.
The return line was steel as was the supply line.

Kind of a long story.
Early design filters returned the oil to a special fitting / bolt that replaced the "normal" bolt at the left side of the fuel pump (to pump stand).
There were issues with higher oil consumption with this routing than normal. Then, the return was changed to a special fitting / bolt at the timing gear cover.
This had the advantage of bathing the gears in oil. Was that necessary? Who knows?
In '41, the return line was routed to an integral fitting near the front of the pan, on the left side.
In '42, no doubt for production economy, that unique fitting was eliminated and a newly designed boss that served to hold the dipstick tube, had a fitting as part of the boss.

Great minds think alike. I was out in the garage working on a beehive oil filter install on my 1941 coupe when I took a break and looked through Fordbarn.

My car never had an oil filter that I know of. I do have the plug near the oil pressure sender for the inlet but I have neither the distributor banjo mount, nor the LH oil pan tap nor the dipstick boss. Would like to use the distributor tap. Third Gen Auto sells the hollow bolt for the banjo fitting but not the banjo fitting. After spending an hour on the internet, I think it's simply not available. Other folks have asked about it. Doesn't seem like it would be too hard to fabricate if you had the right fitting. Anyone done this? What did you use?


If I have to, I'll take off the oil pan and install the dipstick boss. That's a little more than I wanted to do though.



I know. You really don't need an oil filter. The bee hive looks so cool though but to install it as a non-functioning decoration just goes against my principles.

Installed and used properly these bypass filters are very effective. They will remove smaller particles than a full-flow filter, and that's a good thing.

In addition to that, the bypass has no output restriction, therefore, no high pressure relief valve found on virtually all modern filters (needed to provide continuing oil pressure to the engine). The difference here, when full, the bypass slows its flow, where the full flow's relief valve opens and dumps junk back into the system.
