Default Intake questions

I took this intake off my engine because the flanges that position the generator bracket are broken. My question is about the two ports seen in the photo. I think I know what one of them is for, but rather than show my ignorance. I am asking for your input. While I am asking questions about the intake, a local flathead builder is a firm believer in using a phenolic (?) spacer between the intake and carburetor. So where is a good place to get one? Thanks, Bergie.

I've seen plenty of phenolic and aluminum carb spacers on EBAY.
All types and thickneses.

It is obviously a later manifold, am wondering if Ford's automatic transmission needed a vacuum source? That is a pretty big port, and I don't believe they had power brakes at that point in time - so I'm pondering an auto-trans?

Who knows the answer?

manifold also used in trucks 8rt, which required a large vacuum port for the two speed rear gear changer and sometimes a booster for brakes. other port is for wiper motor, remember this maniflod came equipped with a carb with a vacuum port located on cab for the load o matic distributor

No vacuum on the early Ford automatic.

The phenolic spacer can be had from Bob [email protected] (610) 933-6637
Comes with three longer studs and two gaskets. IIRC around $20. He also has the fuel line from the firewall to the pump and thermostats. He advertises in the V8 Times. Nice people to deal with........Mark

Absolutely on the spacer. I have a 1 and 1/8th under my 4GC on a relatively stock Merc. I started out with the ½” phenolic and added a ½” aluminum later. Seems more responsive and maybe a little more torquey (sp).

Ditto on the wiper motor. Looks like the right size port not only for a truck rear end but for a Columbia rear end too. Here's a picture of a Columbia rear end vacuum plate from an old advertisement on the H.A.M.B.

Thanks for everyone’s input. It was important to me to get a idea of what the larger port might be for because the manifold I put on my engine doesn’t have it. I was honored today to be invited to join a coffee klatch of ten flathead enthusiasts discussing their flathead building/driving experiences. At 72, I was the second youngest and absolutely the least experienced. What a hoot! Besides what has been already mentioned, the group suggested the possibility someone had a PVC setup. The takeaway for me was that I don’t need that port. Thanks, again to everyone, Bergie.
