Default Question for all Deluxe Delivery owners

Does anyone know when the locking method change on the rear door occurred? Was the pillar lock first then change to the locking T handle or the other way around. Was the locking T handle a late 31 feature? I've had 2 late 31 Deluxe Deliveries and neither had the pillar lock. Did the change over happen during the switch to the indented firewall? I searched the thread on Commercial vehicles and noted one early 31 had the pillar lock. Without accurate data I'm leaning toward the pillar lock being a 30 through early 31, however, more then one source says the pillar lock was a Jan to Dec 31 feature.

From "The Ford Model A as Henry Built It" by George DeAngelis - "In March 1931, a new rear door lock arrangement was released for production. Instead of a locking cylinder in the door handle, a separate lock was assembled in the door lock pillar". I found this statement after I had located a handle with the lock cylinder for my September 1931 Delivery. I have since sold and found another without the lock cylinder (and that was a difficult search).

Spike, did you mean Dec 31 or Jan 32? It's my understanding the indented firewall didn't start till around April 31.....

GordonJ, No doubt that will also be in a Service Bulletin also. I'll have to check my motor # and see if it's an early indented firewall 31. It was an original vehicle with the original rear door and has the locking handle. (no pillar lock) Perhaps the factory was a bit behind the introduction which is not uncommon.

T handle on my 29. Same basic handle as the 28 coupe, but has a longer shaft and different escutcheon. 30-31 Deluxe Delivery handle was completely different as were most of the features of the whole body. Rod

What do you mean when you refer to "pillar" lock? My late '31 Deluxe Delivery basket case has a round hole for a lock below the handle. Is that what you mean by pillar lock? Anybody got a couple of pics of the lock and pillar of a late 31 delivery? My door is missing wood, etc , so I'm trying to imagine how it looks.

This info came from the book, ( As Henry Built It) I don't have a picture of that set up, but maybe someone here on the Barn does.

Thanks for the info, Don. These Deluxe Deliveries can be a puzzle at times. I was also wondering if the top sheet metal above the driver and passenger side doors is the same as on a regular Tudor sedan, or if it is unique to the Delivery. Do you know?

October '30 Deluxe Delivery T handle here. Think the column locks came later, as has been stated. pretty sure the top metal over front doors are the same as Tudor... I know the doors are the same.

Yes it is the same , in fact the doors are the same as well, as long as they are Murray Body Parts , not Briggs!

Thinking about what you wrote..... I guess I knew that Fordor sedan and Town Car bodies were built by both Murray and Briggs, but didn't know that Tudor bodies were. Where on a 30-31 Tudor does it identify whether it is a Murray or a Briggs-built body?

Barb,

Not in the Service Bulletins that I could see BUT it is in the March 27, 1931 Chicago Service Letters.

There is lots of "KEY" information in the Ford Service Letters that one should view!

The last known drawing date of a part related to the "NEW" type of latch system was March 28, 1931 according to the MAFFI website. If this is correct, then the "NEW" latch system did not show up until April of 1931 OR maybe even May of that year.
