'54 Motor Mount Location

I took my 256 Merc engine out for rebuild and thought I put the motor mounts back on the same way they were before but the engine won't go back in and line up. I thought that the open end of the "C" shape of the motor mounts was supposed to face the rear, towards the firewall. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Face them as if you are streamlining them, the open part to the rear. The studs are a little long though, it helps to saw a half inch off the studs while the mounts are still in your hands. They slide in the holes better that way.

Also, never keep the dizzy cap tight while you put the motor in. It will get cracked every time.

Distributor cap.

The way I always did it, I installed the motor mounts to the frame then lowered the engine down on top of them. Its a little harder to get the holes lined up, but its better than taking a chance on tearing up the motor mount threads if you tried to do it the other way.

Pity they never really grasped the V8 til they got hold of the aluminum V8 they put in Rovers.
And yep, we sure love our beers. It is possible to get in a fight if you don't like the local brews. Our beer seems to bring out the best in folk.

I never found out til recently that Vegemite is actually a byproduct of the brewing process.
It puts lead in your pencil.

Thanks to you guys for your help! I got it bolted in yesterday. I put the mounts in the frame slots, lowered the motor down, yelled at it a few times, and finally got the bolts through the upper motor mount holes and screwed into the block. In retrospect, I should have opened up the upper holes in the motor mounts about 1/32" larger which would have made it easier; not much clearance in the original holes, meaning the motor and mounts have to be aligned well to get those bolts in.
I sold my '47 Plymouth coupe to a guy in Narrawalle, New South Wales last year. Took a long time for him to get all the forms and paperwork taken care of.
Won't do anything like that with my Mercury; it's going the be in my estate sale!

Another trick is to leave the bolts in the block loose so that the mounts sort of flop. This makes it easier to get the studs inserted into the frame as they will move around. This way, you don't have to stand on your head to get the bolts started into the block.
