Default Brake lining rivet tool

This is only my own personal observation. I bought what I thought was the better of what is available with the hardened tools? The hardness is questionable. The tool That roles the rivet is starting to mushroom on both ends a little. After only doing the fronts I'm hoping it will last threw the job. also had to grind the front of the anvil so that when riveting the front and back where the shoe is thicker where roller pins go threw the tool was at a slight angle. So I messed up a couple of rivets. After grinding it worked great. I hope this did not turn into a rant. The tool works great It made knocking the old rivets out a breeze but quality seems to be lacking.

I always put drop of oil on the tool before I roll the rivet. The oil makes the roll nicer and saves some wear on the tool. I have a couple different rivet tools I picked up at swap meets and no wear problems with them after doing several brake shoes.

The $20 kick rivet tool my brother bought at hershey with the tools did a factory like job. It also seemed to pull the lining down tighter then what i remember the hammer tools did.

The tool is kind of large but they can be had in the $20 to $50 range. There always seems to be a few to choose from at Hershey.

Try Aircraft Spruce's Rivet tool, RAPCO 10-02065 $27, it has a threaded shaft. Been using one for thirty years on my airplane.

Thanks for posting that. I was trying to remember that tool, but could only remember that it was aircraft related. Our club has that same tool in the club tool box, and it works great. As I've mentioned before, I always put a drop of oil on the part that rolls the rivet. It helps the tool as well as helps to form a better roll with less chance of a split in the roll.

Unlike the tool the various vendors sell, the Rapco tool does not appear to have anything for drilling the holes in the linings. Is that even an issue, given that the linings sold by various vendors come pre-drilled?

I used my Dremel to make a stepped drill bit and use it along with a stop collar, set to the correct depth, to drill the holes in emergency brake linings. I clamp the lining to the band, then use a drill bit the size of the rivet shaft to drill the hole, starting the hole from the band side of course. Then I come back on the lining side with my homemade stepped drill bit to drill the countersink for the rivet head. The ground down step just acts as a pilot for the larger part of the bit.
