steel main cap.l
Hi. Does anyone out there know if someone makes steel main caps. I want to put one on my 1948 flathead. I already contacted Program Engineering and they said at this time they don't. I don't want to use the support that Speedway Motor sales. Thanks

Flathead Jack sells a couple of different setups. Page 119 of Catalog 10. I also suggest reading John W.Lawson's book "Flathead Facts" in which he discusses crankshaft support. See pages 140 - 160. Excellent information and good "gearhead" reading material.

As far as I know, if you're talking about the center bearing support, there is nothing great that is commercially available. I made my own from a piece of steel and milled and drilled to fit. |

Re: steel main cap.l
The same outfit that maks the Sharp heads, also maks them. Brain dead. Unless your running a blower I don't see the need for a steel cap. In fact the stock mains have served us well with no help at all. The speed way unit has been used for the past 60 years. The steel cap needs to be align bored, kinda pricy for a street engine. But what ever floats your boat.

I'm not sure if they are still available. It was a 4 bolt type. |

The Wilcap Company of Pismo Beach, Ca., makes steel main caps for flatheads. They also make flywheels, transmission adapters, and Sharp speed equipment. You can access their website at www.wilcap.com.

Re: steel main cap.l
Doug King use to be the main & best source of these for years. Not sure if he is still making them. I'm sure others are making them now as well.
I agree with 'Ol Ron. I picked #1 & #2 up from Uncle Max years ago. If you are really concerned, use a steel strap type system. Steel mains will require you to line bore the mains. Not cheap & if the shop does really know how to do it, they can ruin the block. What type of build are planning that you think needs these? |
