Correct 1951 Ford carpet material
Hi,
What was the original carpet material used in 49-51 Ford Crestliners and Victorias? How about the rear in Custom Models? I have a 51 Deluxe, which I know didn't originally have carpet, and would like to put in something semi-original. My Lebaron Bonney sample card for Customs and Deluxes shows short cut-pile wool, but doesn't really say if it is like the original material - just something about how front and rear carpets weren't original in these models. Thanks, Ken |

Re: Correct 1951 Ford carpet material
I can only go by the '49 I had, but it had the original front mat, which was a brown color, with carpet in the rear. I no longer have the car, but I may still have a sample of the rear carpet. If I can find it I will post a photo later.

Re: Correct 1951 Ford carpet material
My first 51 Mercury even had a brown rubber mat. It had a jute type backing under it. Ford was just starting to use carpet again in the 1951 model year so the higher end cars most likely had it as an option. Ford Victorias and Mercury Montereys did have the option I believe. I'll have to check my Body parts catalogs to be for certain.

Re: Correct 1951 Ford carpet material
Ken, LB's short, cut pile, wool is correct for both the 49 & 50 Custom rear with a rubber mat in front. 49 & 50 DeLuxes were rubber mats in front and rear. The main color was Benton gray but I believe that there was also a brown available. I am not familiar with the Crestliners or 51s. It has been my experience that LeBaron Bonney is as correct as possible in this day and age. Hope that helps

51 Crestliners and Victorias had carpet in front and rear per the 49-50-51 Restorer's guide.

Re: Correct 1951 Ford carpet material
Thanks for the replies. I will probably go with the LB rear mat, or at least use their material to do one. I have one of the black reproduction mats for the front. Can anyone tell me if it is supposed to go over the sill plates or under? Under would be neater, but then I guess I would have to loosen the sill plates whenever I want to access the master cylinder. That would be about every 5 years at my current rate... Ken

Under the sill plates
Here are photos of the rear carpet material from my '49. The sample was taken from under the seat for color correctness. Last edited by Russ/40; 01-23-2011 at 06:48 PM. |
