Looking to add dual temp gauges
I am looking to add dual temp gauges under the dash. Currently has a '36 motor with rebuilt water pumps, still 6 volt. What type of senders and gauges should I use, and how are they wired?

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
I am running mechanical Stewart Warner dual temp gauges. I have a 3 space cluster with the driver head on the left, oil pressure in the middle and the passenger head on the right side. With 180 deg. T-stats the driver side runs a lil over 165, and the passenger runs a lil over 175. As far as lighting goes, you can probably use 6 volt dash light bulbs.

Could run mechanical gauges. No wiring outside of night lighting.

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
These analog gauges don't require power? Just the sender to gauge?
These look like they might work out. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SW...0-72/?rtype=10 |

Yes those guages from summit look like they would work fine. The ones from VDO in the pic, have a lite, but I am not going to use it, so no power needed either. The guages are mechanical and use a capillary tube for the water to travel to the guage, they were $39.00 each from, Summitracing or Jeggs. |

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
Does the '36 have two temp sending unit locations (one in each head)? I installed a mechanical temp gauge in our '39 (it has only one outlet in the driver’s side head). I installed two mechanical temp gauges in our '53 F-100 Panel Truck (it has two outlets, one in each head).

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
Looks like the location for the sender is in the neck of the water pump.

Mike51merc, thanks for the correction in regards to water traveling to guage, it is sealed.

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
Why not use one gauge and two senders hooked up to a double throw switch? That is what I did.......haven't got the car running yet, but sure am getting close....Matt in Alameda

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
I just put two stewart warner gauges on a 1936 flathead. My RH water pump didn't have the temp sender hole so I used another LH water pump on the RH side. The threads on the gauge fittings were the same thread as in the water pumps and had a shoulder at the bottom of the water pump hole so I didn't have to use adapter fittings.

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
That's exactly what I have. Two left side water pumps. Did you have any clearance issue with the sender going in on the right? Nice to know the threads are the same.

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
No clearance problem at all, I like the idea of two gauges so if you have a problem you know which side it's on.

Two mechanical gauges works good for me. Running a 36 motor in a 34 car.

Re: Looking to add dual temp gauges
as others have suggested, mechanical guages are a good choise, get the ones with 270 degree sweep. they give a more precise reading. i used SUNPRO which are available at most parts stores. they were less than $20 a few years ago. Personally i would not use stewart warner. from what i understand they are assembled in mexico from ??????> parts by a company out of pa. called maxima technologies. the words CUSTOMER SERVICE is not in their vocabulary. (just my personal experience)
