Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
A frind of mine stopped this by today and asked me if I was interested in it. We are trying to establish a price and in order to get in the ballpark as far as value. One thing is he thinks it is a true vintage piece prior to 1940. I am thinking because of its good condition ( other than a broken thermomter) it is likely 1970's or newer repep. Can anyone tell me how to tell for sure? Keep in mind I have a thermometer for it. Thanks Rod

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
If the bottom of the thermometer brass stem has a welsh plug then it would be an original based on my knowledge. I cannot tell for sure from the photo if there is a plug or solid brass stem.

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
The scores for the face plat are the give away if they are smooth they are a repop if they have a pattern on them they are original.

Original screws have the wrinkle finish to match the rim

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
I remember seeing a rough texture in the scores, but no real pattern, I will have to look closer and will look for the welch plug also when I stop by his house tommorrow. Thanks Rod

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
I'd say both parts are recent repro.
I have an old set of wings on a 30-1 twist cap, but the motormeter is gone. My wings show much more detail, especially on the bottom side. |

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
Went and looked at it again and I might call it mid 80's repop at the newest. No agreed value yet, but took my phone and showed him the differences as stated above a. Based on that we both agree it is a repop. Now for the next part of the delima, will this vintage thermomter physicly fit into it? I have not removed it from the cap yet, so that has not been checked. Rod

Repro meter; the screws give it away, like Kurt says. Don't know about the wings.

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
The screws on an original have a definite pattern on the head, and they recess into the rim a bit. The face plates on originals are more golden than yellow.

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
I don't believe the thermometer elements of the repros are replacable.

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
I will find out this evening. Seemed like the thermometer element turned, but not sure if that means it will come out. Rod

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
I was informed by a knowledgeable Model A'er that my observation was incorrect. He felt the meter was original and the screws had been replaced. I respect his opinion and will go with that. COmbined with Steve's comment, I have to conclude it is an original.

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
I had to replace my original meter when it broke at the base I bought a reproduction and replaced all the components with the exception of the thermometer and the housing with the original including the screws and they were the same threads and interchanges perfectly.there was no thread difference

Re: Older Repop or True Vintage Motometer
OK, Anyone can change the screws & the face plate rings, which are also not correct... The ONLY real way is the ORIG. ones all have been plated all the way to the bottom of the bulb holder & has a little plug in it.. All the re-pops are solid brass..
