81 ford carburetor

Hi, can anybody out there tell me the differences between the big log 81 and the small logo 81 with the 67 above??? Thanks BILL

97's have the 67 above it. 81's have 52 above the #81. theres no diff in them either one. ken ct.

The jets should be .035 and the power valve .071..The base of the 81 should have EE 7/8 due to small ventures. The accelerator pump is small then the 48 and 97..The throttle shaft is the same as 97s but with smaller throttle plates..Idle jets the same, small check valve same as 97s and 48s..

I was told long ago the added # was carb was for trucks???? Other than that dont know. There both same internally, i know that NO DIFF. ken ct.

Those are the prefixes to the Ford PN, the part that tells you which carb you have. All carbs are 9510 (I thinK), but 52-9510 is the 81 and 67-9510 is the 97.
52=5 for 1935, when the 60 went into production for England and Europe only, and 2=one of the designations for 60HP
67 is the number for parts for 1936 commercial.

Now...the pn is assigned by the first use, not only use. Ford trucks and commercials bear many parts with passenger PN and vice versa.
The 81 was first used in the USA as an econo accessory for the '36 commercials used in slow speed service, and was not recommended for any other purpose until 1937 when we got the 60. I think it may have had a dif PN before the 60 went into US production...
the 97 was ALSO first an over-the-counter carb for economy in 1936, then it rapidly took over as a full production carb. It was ALSO first recommended for city commercial use, hence the 67 instead of 68!
This stuff is somewhere in the '36 bulletins.
In general, prefixes are assigne by first vehicle the thing was planned for, and most remain unchanged until there is a design change.
Oddly, the conspicuous 81 and 97 labels have no reference to either Ford or Stromberg systems.

Use of just the prefix was common at Ford...they figured that the parts man knew that he was looking at a carb or whatever, and the prefix was sufficient to tell him which carb. That way he could quickly match it to the parts book and did not need the sort of detailed scrutiny it would otherwise take to tell one Stromberg from another.
