Default Speedway 97 kits

If you purchase a Speedway 97 rebuild kit------BEWARE!!!!

We just went through rebuilding six 97s on a SB GM. Replaced all six pumps and the needle/seats. The only parts usable were the gaskets.

None of the needle/seats would shut off the fuel into the bowl----even at 1 psi.

The accelerator pumps would not work until the carb was opened up half way. Ended up getting pumps out of a 40 year old spare parts box----they worked fine!

Just Monday morning grumbling time!

I had issues with the pumps falling apart. No issues with the needle and seats..

If you run the neoprene/viton tipped needles you can run 6 lb. fuel pressure and they will never leak...If yours is a racing application, it takes at least 6 lb. to keep the bowl full at full throttle.

Actually I ran 8 lb on the 48's in the pic.
You will notice the fuel pressure gauge sitting on 8 lb. and the engine is not running..It had been sitting there about 10 minutes when that pic was taken.
Most modern carbs run similar type needles.

Strombergs have served me well over the years from completely stock ones on restorations to all out modified floatless ones running 100% nitro which by the way showed equal dyno hp to a set of Hilborn injectors.

on my 9super 7's it will fill back carb first and then blow past needle and run gas into engine if you don't hurry and crank it.you can see gas coming out base of carb.put 1-4psi Mr Gasket pump on it the other day and will fire it up today

Float are generally too small to handle over 4lb. But if they work great. Mine won't hardly hold 2 1/2.

I know they ran w/o floats on some engines..So pressure wouldn't make much difference..
