Re: Static in Radio
Hi Fred: How you trap it depends on the type of noise. If it is spark noise when the engine is running, and you have metallic core plug wires, be sure both ends of each wire are soldered to the terminal. If it a buzzing noise, it is probably the vibrator. Solid state vibrators are available. If it is a whirring noise, you can put ignition type condensers on the battery post of the generator, and the armature terminal on the voltage regulator. Be sure the base of the antenna is grounded to the body, that the cable from the antenna to the radio has a braided cover soldered to the jack that feeds the radio. Try adjusting the antenna "trimmer". You will usually find it behind the tuning knob. Look for a hole with a screw head behind it. Tune the radio to a distant station near the top of the dial, then turn the trimmer screw back and forth to get the strongest signal. Be sure there is a ground strap between the engine and the car body, too. We used to trap "scratching" noises by putting a condenser on the terminals of the gas and oil senders to ground. In the majority of cases. radio noise can be lessened, but hardly ever gone except for very close nearby radio stations. I fixed mine by converting it to AM/FM. On the FM band, it is quiet, and there is actually music instead of inane talk! Good luck, Fred!

Re: Static in Radio
You could install a set of Red's Headers and Brockman Mellow-Tone mufflers... Makes beautiful music and obsoletes your radio... LOL

Re: Static in Radio
That is what I've always seen is the condenser on the coil, most cars I have owned had these clear through the 60s.
