Default 57 T Bird question?? From Bubbas

Although i usually hang out on the earlier forums , i have a customer with a interesting issue. Its a really nice 57 T Bird with the 312 engine and a factory air cleaner.
The air cleaner is factory but the air filter element isnt. It appears that the filter element is quite a bit shorter in height than it should be as the upper part of the air cleaner only allows a small air gap for air to travel thru when installed . Maybe 3/8 of a inch or less!!! Engine runs rich and runs better when air cleaner is removed.
Anyone know the correct height for the air filter element???

Thanks in advance

Bubba, those air filters are available at any early bird parts store, email me if you need a store location. There should not be any air gap, the filter should seal top and bottom. It sounds like he has two issues a filter with to much air gap that would not cause the engine to run rich. A carb, vacuum or timing problem. P/S thanks for the work you did on my flathead distributors. Frank

The air filter unit on my '57 Bird is an original stock unit... The filter is a 'PEROLATOR' APF 80... 2/3" x 13-3/8"...

You misunderstood. The air filter is too thin allowing the top chrome lid to almost hit the bottom , choking the air flow. AND he bought it at a early bird parts store.....
