29 standard coupe vs special
What are the differences between a standard 1929 coupe and a special coupe. I have a 29 and don't know what I have. On some coupes the top fabric goes over the back on other no. What models have the top covered down to the trunk?

Re: 29 standard coupe vs special
Special coupes were made from the middle of 28 through the middle of 29. Special coupes have the top material going down to the belt rail, not just on the top like standard coupes. I have a 28 special coupe.

Re: 29 standard coupe vs special
Gridleak, why not post a photo of what you have? The wood and panels that make up a special coupe are quite different than the standard coupe body work, and different from a sport coupe or the Business coupe. Post a couple of pixs and let us help with your question.

Then the Standard Coupe 45-A was re-introduced. The Special Coupe had the Sedan Decking (roof covering) all the way down the back of the roof to the Belt line. Some folks refer to them as "Leather-back" Coupes. The roofing material also wraps around the sides of the roof, coming all the way forward to the rear edge of the quarter windows. There are short curved mouldings along the rear edge of the quarter windows that cover where the roofing material is tacked down. Also, there is a removable belt moulding ( two-pieces: a bottom "nailer track" that covers the bottom seam where the roofing material is nailed-down at the belt-line wood, then a smooth, curved "cap moulding" that gets tapped-over the nailer track, and locks-onto it.) There IS sheet metal around the back and behind the quarter windows on the Special Coupe, but there are holes, or slots behind the Quarter windows, to allow you to nail the roofing material and trim mouldings "through" the steel skin. Standard coupes have a belt-line reveal that is stamped right into the sheet metal, not a separate moulding, and there will be no holes around the rear of the quarter windows, just smooth sheet metal. Some pics would be great ! |
