Default Earlier Post...

Earlier I had posted that my car started dying after driving a mile and barely make it home, spitting and sputtering and backfiring. Well it turns out the battery went bad and I'm guessing that the cutout switch was causing the backfiring like if I was turning the key off and on. In the meantime I took the distributer apart and the carb only to not find anything there to cause the problems.
My questing here now is; should I use permatex on the gaskets on the carb to make sure no air leaks occur.

Hi Tom,

A. Usually if it starts OK; then runs OK for up to one (1) mile; then begins sputtering & backfiring, many times the cause is:

1. Poor fuel flow; and/or,

2. Condenser and/or coil are getting hot & are failing.

B. Next, Permatex cannot harm gaskets;; however, if gaskets are severely mashed, or torn, best to get new gaskets which are not expensive.

C. If cutout is bad, get a new one.

More specific details cannot hurt to try to fid out what is going on.

Gentlemen thanks for getting back to me. I found nothing wrong with the carb. I do have new gaskets. The battery is dead. Won't take a charge..load test confirms. Not sure about the burnout proof condenser yet. Gas cap is loose..shouldn't have been a factor...cutout is the diode type. The most obvious thing at this time is the battery.

how do you like the diode type cutout? i had my engine running on a stand seemed to be working ok, then the cutout stuck and fried my wires haha. i installed a diode but havent started it since. curious how well they perform out in the real world

No sealer needed.

Ditto.

A diode will work fine for the cutout. Just be sure it has a good heat sink.
I always use an original cutout and have never had a problem.

Diode seems to be working well. Heard the horror stories on the cutouts, so went with the diode type. Thanks for the imput on the permatex...I won't use it. Is there soposed to be lock washers on the carb to manifold bolts?

Yes I believe there should be lock washers on the carb bolts.
