Default F100 brake conversion. use F100 hubs or 37-48 hubs

I have pair of 54-56 F100 backing plates and drums and one hub. I think it is a 37-40 hub and the register diameter on the hub is 3.253; while the hole in the drum is about .100 in. smaller. Question; did that dia. change over time do I cut the register on the hubs to match( lathe)? Thanks .Joel

Sure works better if you can find a pair of F100 hubs. It's a matter of the offsets.

How new F100 hubs will work? Can I move the shoulder for the inner bearing back by machining the spindle to use the 37-48 hubs?

THE BIG DISAVANTAGE OF THIS SYSTEM WEATHER IT'S THE f100 OR THE cHRYSLER Hubs is they weight aprox 35 lbs more than the stock brakes. I built mine using stock Ford passenger hubs and jee[ GC rear rotors amd callapers, this weighs aprox the same. Unfortunately no one makes the bracket for the calaper, I made my own.

I have them on my avatar - they are not disc brakes but they are better than stock. You can also modify them for self adjusting hardware and that makes for a little less maintenance …..

Thanks to everyone for their input. I want to pass this set on and since I didn't have F100 hubs, I didn't want to mislead with bad info. I have had these squirreled away since the 80's. I'm cleaning house.

When using the F-100 hubs on the 37-48 spindles you need to do the following; The stock outer Ford wheel bearing will work from 37-48. You then make an inner bearing and seal change. The F-100 backing plates will bolt the early spindles. There was an old Rod and Custom Quarterly that gave all the part numbers to make the conversion.

Speedway has a kit with all the needed bearings and parts.
You have to grind a radius on the inner bearings. I don’t think you can use 42-48 spindles because of hose interference

You can use them by grinding a notch on the top of the spindle to clear the hose. There are also hoses that have a metal extension on them that can clear the spindle.

Only the '37-'41 round-back spindles need to be slightly ground for hose clearance; the hoses clear '42-'48 square-back spindles as-is.

'53-'56 F-100 hubs are the only ones that will work.

'48-'52 F-1 hubs will also work with those backing plates; but you would also need to get different drums.

Rich, thanks for the correction. I had it backwards. Hadn't done that change in a long time.

Rock Auto still lists the drums.

F-100 Drums, shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders and bearings are all still available at most regular auto parts stores. I have them on my '41 p/u and they stop GREAT and adjustment is easy. I have a few more sets for future projects.

As mentioned F-100 drums are readily available.

As for F-1; the drums are obsolete in the aftermarket; but Bronco rear drums
fit.

Be aware; if you order an F-1 drum from a vintage parts/restoration dealer you will get a Bronco drum at a higher price point.

There were some cast Argentina F-1 drums marketed for a while; but they seem to be gone.

I have copies of the articles that ran in the hot rod magazines. If any one would like a copy, message me with your snail mail address.
