Default The Next Generation

Who's bringing up the next generation of flathead nuts?

My oldest daughter emailed that she wanted her oldest son (12) to spend some time with me on some kind of project. Old Henry's hospitalization had just started and there was a lot of surgery to do.

So I said he could come and spend a couple of days with me on that, to send him with clothes that he could throw away after, safety goggles, and something for his head to keep from grinding the dirt into his hair. So, he came and we spent two days working on Old Henry together. He helped get the oil pan off then put the flywheel back on (it was good he was there or I'd have never gotten the bolts on the flywheel through that little crack between it and the transmission case).

Then we tackled the rebuild of the transmission, he reading out of the original Ford transmission manual.

I'm not sure he totally caught the bug but he's a real bright quick kid and especially loved the amazing mechanical intricacies of the transmission. We'll see.

What's anyone else doing to keep the hobby alive?

He's the oldest of 16 grandsons that I have with 2 more on the way so I should be able to infect at least one with the bug. I will surely try.

Ahh to be young again and have someone like yourself to show the way.
Like the mirrored wall and would like to do the same in my garage but at my age I would probably keep running into it thinking that it's another part of the garage.

Neat that you have grandsons that like to help. 22 grandchildren? You are sure way ahead of me in that department. Enjoy them while you can. They grow up so fast.

Please put some cinder blocks with 2 x 6's under the frame for extra safety. For some reason it always scares me to have only 4 jack stands supporting a car.

I was confused for a minute, not realizing there was a mirror. I thought we had two Old Henry's, man and car!

The mirrored wall is part of the décor for when we convert the garage into The G'Raj Mahal for our monthly family dinners in colder weather (in the summer we have them in the back yard). Just last night we had 32 for dinner.

More G'Raj Mahal photos for anyone interested: http://s1059.photobucket.com/user/cr...?sort=4&page=2

Oops. I misunderstood what grandma told me. I have 16 grandsons with two on the way and 12 granddaughters. Total of 28 going on 30 grandchildren. Total of 49 going on 51 in the fam.

One might call me a family man and mighty proud of it.

Hey, 14's a good age to get started. My youngest son was 14 when he and I started restoring Old Henry and spent 100 days over the next year doing it.

I have 5 daughters and 5 sons. They are all of the ones sitting on the chairs oldest to youngest from left to right in the family photo.

Nice looking family. The fellow on your left looks like my son "Trip" who is 46 with two beautiful daughters.

I agree with 19Fordy, I almost had my 48 fall off of jack stands before I learned. Lucky I was not under it and was able to stabilize it.

That's Doug, married to my oldest daughter sitting in front of him. He's 40. They have 6 children . . . so far.

Beautiful family and thank you for sharing with us. My wife is the 5th of 13 siblings and my in-laws have 25 grandchildren so far. I'm from a family of 4, quite a difference but each scenario is fun and unique in its own right.

19Fordy makes an excellent point. Put some cinder blocks or pieces of 4X4 under that car just for insurance. I live in earthquake country, so I never trust just having jack stands under a car. Looking at those photos showing only jack stands under that old Ford made me real nervous.

Roger that good buddies. Never hurts to be a little more careful. I guess when old Chuckles up the street and I have been working on our 47's most of our lives on 4 jack stands without any problems we tend to just keep doing it the same way.
