Default How to remove 47 drive shaft bearing race and seal?

Part numbers 4645 and 4655 on this diagram:

Will they push out with the end of the drive shaft if I get it on an angle to catch them or what?

Professor, Are you talking about the center sleeve and bearing? What makes you think they need replacing? If so, you need to remove the tube and driveshaft from the rearend. THEN:

Good luck

4655 is springloaded against the tube with a dimple that locks it in. You have to "fold" it in slightly to get the dimple free so it will rotate and be pulled out.

Great video. Amazing how easy it is with the right tool.

Thanks for sharing.

I did consider seriously replacing that bearing. Main problem is I have not been able to find a new one from any supplier and understand they are not repro'ed any more. I have no reason to believe anything is wrong with mine. I just wanted to replace everything that I could while it's all apart to hopefully put off having to take it all apart again as long as possible.

Try Skip Haney for a drive shaft carrier bearing.

Good source. He's still selling them.

Thanks for the tip.

I removed the sleeve and oil seal using a PortOPower and a 5' 3/4" iron pipe extension that I got at Lowes. I bolted a piece of scrape metal on the pinion end of the torque tube and used the shoulder fitting on the ram to catch under the scrape metal. The 5' section of pipe went through the center bearing and pressed against the side of the seal. Pump the ram up and the seal and the sleeve came out together.

PS On another car I had to pay over $150 to have a machine shop replace the seal. I don't know how long it took them to do the job, but by my method I spent less than 1/2 hour.

I don't have a PortOPower. Would pounding work?

Made this tool out of $10.00 worth of pipe fittings to remove the front torque tube bearing race. Worked just like the KR Wilson tool shown in the video.

Now I'm struggling with the seal that I thought could be pulled out easy once the race was removed. Not yet. Been pounding on it with the drive shaft and it hasn't budged yet.

Well, I went and bought a 6 foot length of 3/4" galvanized pipe as V12Bill recommended and pounded on that seal until it finally came out.

Thanks for your help.
