Default Front left wheel play

Aloha
Got a slight play on the front left wheel when I hold the wheel at the top and bottom. Side to side seems ok
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Wheel bearings, king pin or king pin lose in the axle is where I would start.

I agree with synchro. I would start by taking the drum off, inspect the bearings, grease the bearings, and then tighten the proper way to rule out the bearing.

If that didnt help then look to the king pins.

Wack the king pin holding wedge bolt, then tighten. Nobody ever checks these things.

That is exactly what causes the eye in the axle to stretch. Then, the only cure is to replace the axle or have the eye shrunk and reamed back to original size.
I hope for the OPs sake, that is not his problem.

Synchro, please explain further. Should the lock bolt be tightened with a wrench only? Are the lock bolts not softer than the forged axle? At least one curious mind wants to know?

Driving the cotter pin (yes, that is a cotter pin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotter...%20split%20pin.) in with a hammer puts a far greater pressure on the wedge part of it than the nut alone does, forcing the pin towards the middle of the axle and the pin towards the outer end of it. That is what stretches the (thin) metal, leaving the eye too big. The nut applies enough pressure. Don't ask how I know this.

Ding...Ding..Ding, we have a winner: Mr. Wick
I just tighten the bolt on the wedge (was not quite able to tighten by hand, but it felt very easy with a short wrench). Play is gone, at least for now.
Will confirm after driving around a bit.
Thank you again for all of you who posted a response, being handy but not really a car guy, I had to do a little bit of research to figure out what you all were talking about. Learning bit by bit.
Again thank you all.

Glad you got it fixed. I was going to volunteer to come and help if you paid for the airline ticket.

I've made that offer several times but never an uptake.
