Pics of '39 hubcap restoration
Guys, it took a lot of time but I'm pretty happy with these for my '39 1/2 Ton. Still looking for two more "cores". Thought I would share these with the class.

Great job on the hub cap(s), what method did you use to paint on the Ford Blue and 'stay between the lines' ?
Enlarging one of your photo's took me to your photo album....very impressive on what you have done....good luck

Re: Pics of '39 hubcap restoration
Thanks for all the comments. To get the blue V-8 symbol painted, I applied a fairly thick layer of paint that would "set inside" the stamping, not paying too much attention to the lines at that point and then after it was completely dried, I came back with a toothpick and a powerful magnifying glass and carefully removed the excess blue paint. Not hard, just tedious. But I love to assign myself very small jobs and gain the accomplishment of completion. I think the if I looked at the restoration in total, it would be overwhelming.

Re: Pics of '39 hubcap restoration
Lawson, nope I did the best I could by gently tapping the dents through the stamping until they were basically gone. Then I used the "straw wheel" buffer that I have. It brought back the stainless to nearly a mirror finish. Not to a NOS quality, but nonetheless, I'm very pleased with the results. Thanks.

Re: Pics of '39 hubcap restoration
Nice job on the caps - I browsed the whole album - lots of nice work there. Frame repair, steering box, axle, all good stuff.
Just started fixing up a 41 pickup, looking at your work has helped a lot. Thanks. Mart. |

Thanks Mart. Yes its been a long but very rewarding journey. And I could not have gotten this far without all the help here.

i need to do resto on my 36 caps also. Please , where do I find a "straw wheel buffer" ? My buffer has a cotton bonnet. Also, what polishing compound did you use? Thanks Benji

Re: Pics of '39 hubcap restoration
John: Very very nice work. Also, looked thru your album, and your pix of other resto work were just superb, and will be very useful for anyone taking the time to look thru them. I need to get in the habit of documenting more on film, as it sure makes reassembly easier. Keep up the good work, and thanks very much!

Re: Pics of '39 hubcap restoration
Thank you to all, glad you like seeing the pictures. Sometimes I feel a little awkward posting pics of the restoration but I think people like to see completed projects, even little ones.
Benji, the straw buffer came from Eastwood and it takes out those billions of small scratches on stainless like magic. I love the buffer wheel - use it all the time.
