Default Stock oil housing to bee hive oil housing install

Hi guys . I want to convert my stock oil housing on my 41 coupe to a beehive firewall mounted set up. Anything I should know before the swap? Are the fittings on the lines usable on the beehive filter? Any info on this would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you install it in the same manner as the original Fram type filter, then make sure it has a .060 orifice on the incoming line (like the stock Ford filter does). This limits the volume and insures that the oil-pressure is maintained in the oil galleys of the block. The output/drain side of the filter goes to the sump/pan, so you don't want a high-volume "leak" to exist - which is the reason for the orifice.

They were reproducing the decal for them. I don't see the original beehives show up for sale as often as I used to. That goes for all that neat old stuff. I have one really nice original for my '32 roadster project that I bought 30-years ago. I used to see originals for sale missing that restricted orifice. They were rarely used on hot rods in the late 1940s. I have hundreds of roadster photos from the late 1940s and only a couple of them had beehives on them. One of them was Scotty's dry lake's roadster, SCTA Hornets Club (Scotty's Muffler, San Bernardino, CA) had a beehive. He was voted best appearing roadster in 1947. That's a famous roadster that has never been found. It was high-dollar car in its day. Jack Calori's famous roadster was voted 2nd best appearing roadster, another roadster that has not been seen since 1953. Both these guys were my friend's I used to go to their homes and listen to their stories. Even though Scotty's roadster was voted best appearing roadster at El Mirage I rarely see photos of it. Every photo collection I borrowed had pictures of Calori's roadster. I don't know who did the voting and what politics were involved but the people taking pictures liked Calori's roadster best.

I utilized a stock filter mount (whittled off the old canister) If I remember correctly, I had to add a bit to catch all the bolt holes on the filter body.
I soldered up the inlet fitting and drilled an appropriate size hole for restriction of flow.

Here's an update on Scotty's roadster...
The Scotty's Muffler 1934 ford roadster was well known on the Southern California dry lakes and on the Bonneville salt flats for more than a quarter century. Now it's in Massachusetts, part of Dave Simard's collection. Running a Chrysler Hemi in its heyday, the historic hot rod is now powered by the Ford Flathead that just might be the most famous Ardun engine ever built.

Thanks for that. Speedway has it listed for flathead engines with a restrictor hole in the center of the filter housing body. This would be for the reason you mentioned?

Thanks for getting a picture of that famous '34 Roadster Pete.
Looks like Dave Simard has a very nice collection hiding behind the roadster.
Too bad it is so dark in the background of that picture...

Any one have any info on the beehive from speedway? Does it have the requirements for oil pressure with that restriction it has built in? Anyone run one?

I have a repro beehive and I noticed the inlet, which is marked is the opposite to the inlet on the Ford canister. I fitted a Ford canister piped as the beehive suggests and was told I had piped it backwards.

To be honest if I fitted the beehive I would pipe it as per the Ford.

Beehive states in at the bottom and out of the side.
Ford (French military in my case) is piped in the side and out of the bottom.

All the fittings are 1/8 NPT and will require brass adaptors to fit the 1/4" pipe fittings.

Mart.

Instead of duplicating the choked down system with the reproduction Beehive, just convert the Beehive to become a true oil filter. The path of the oil doesn't go thru the entire "by pass" filter!! so what's the point?? The block needs to be upgraded to divert the oil out of the block,.... thru the filter, ....and then back into the block. The information is well know for this upgrade. It's a real upgrade to filter the oil!!
