Mystery problem-won't re start when hot
Hi - My phaeton starts well from cold, I take it for a 6 mile drive and it runs fine. I switch it off and it will start again if I try it straight away but if left for about 10mins it will not re start. If it is then left for approx. 40 mins it will start fine! It has recently been to a specialist garage for a full service and had new radiator fitted, new points, new coil etc but still the problem persists. Any ideas please? Surely someone can solve it!

Hook up a timing light to coil wire and hang it inside on dash where you can see it flash.
Go for a drive. See if it flashes when trying hot start. This will easily diagnosis or eliminate spark problem. |

Re: Mystery problem-won't re start when hot
I do turn the gas off when I park. I have also tried many different combinations initially touching nothing, then pulling choke out then throttle no choke etc. The only answer seems to be to leave it for 40mins - not very good at a fuel station. Thanks for ideas!

A possible heat soak problem leading to vapor lock?

Wow, My late Father rebuilt his 8N tractor engine when i was like 15, it ran better afterwards but would also still flood like yours.

Is the gas cap venting properly? I had a similar experience and when I opened the gas cap I heard a rush of air. I put on a different cap and the problem was solved.

Re: Mystery problem-won't re start when hot
I have always had to choke my sedan real quickly when it's hot. This over 50 years, two engine rebuilds, multiple carbs and distributors. I've just accepted it as one of those quirks. My other two A's don't require it.

I think it's the coil.
Touch the coil. Can you keep your hand on it?

Re: Mystery problem-won't re start when hot
It did still have the original coil on it but after a series of repro's that leaked oil I fitted another new one at the week end. They all seem to get very hot but I have been told that is normal!?

Re: Mystery problem-won't re start when hot
Take it one step at a time, check for spark will it jump a spark with a good snap sound that is nice and blue a 1/4"? If so, move on, is there gas dripping out of carb? Try shutting off the gas let the car run until it dies, turn the gas back on and try restarting, leave choke off, if it dous not start give it a quick choke, does it start?

Re: Mystery problem-won't re start when hot
Modern coils are not meant to be mounted upside down, they will leak oil.
I had a 46 Dodge flat head 6 that did the same thing. I was told the starter was drawing too many AMPs when hot not leaving enough to fire the coil. Being a downdraft I would flood it, then have to take off the air cleaner and try and soak up as much gas as I could reaching down through the carb. That probly would give everything enough time to cool down and it would start. |
