Default What method or chemical used to bring out frame/body numbers?

What method have you guys used to bring out a stamped body or frame number?

I understand that there may be a chemical that can be used.

I can pretty much read the engine and the frame number (fortunately they match), but the body number is another story.

The body number was not stamped on the front body crossmember, it was stamped on the driver side body rail. A least half of the number was not stamped very deep. Is there a method to help read it?

Also, to any of you have a body number that was stamped at the Los Angeles factory? I'd like to see a picture, if possible. I checked with Steve Plucker, but he does not have any pictures.

Thank you.

Try at your own risk....I have not tried it.

The coin stuff ALCHEMY talks about is still available nowdays & is called " Nic-a-date " . Usually some on epay & it is really simple to use . Remember to neutralize with baking soda when done .

If you google " raising numbers stamped in steel" you will come up with several methods some similar to the one described in the HAMB.
In the law enforcement community we frequently use these "etching fluids" to restore numbers that have been removed ( ground ) off of guns and cars. I don't know what the recipe is but it is definitely an acid and it works well. Sometimes you do risk losing the number if the acids work at it for to long.

and why have i been told that when the motors were placed in the cars, they didn't match . they didn't match until the motor was swapped out for a rebuilt and only then were they re-stamped to match the frame. that's old knowledge just handed down to me this evening.
tell me something about this. anyone.

I've had some success with rubbing the number with a soapstone, then wipe it clean. The white soapstone will stay down in the stamped numbers.

Engines were stamped when built and tested. Frames were stamped when the engines were placed in the frame. The car left the assembly line with matching numbers, engine/frame.

That's why you should keep the same number as the frame on a replacement motor.
