Default Flathead Starter Brush Assembly???

Ok I give up... I pulled a starter off a 40 flatty and the brushes popped off the armature. How and the heck do you reinstall these things?
I disassembled the access band on the body of the unit but even then I can't figure out how to hold the brushes in place to slide the armature back in. How do you hold the brush clips back?? yikes...no room in there.
What a pain... Special Ford Tool?

Ohio Rick. Take a piece of wire like machanic's wire about 12in. long, bend it too in the middle, now you have a loop 6in. long, put the loop down in the slot where the brushes go, hook it under the spring that holds the brushes, pull up the spring and push the brush up the slot untill it's above the spring, let the spring push on the side of the brush, that will hold the brush up, install the armature and brush end plate, push the brush down the slot untill it lands on the armature, now the spring will land on top of the brush and hold it down. When you put the long bolts through, install a couple of 5/16 course nuts on the end so the starter don't fall apart again. When you install the starter, take the nuts off and don't let the starter fall apart while installing. Thanks Walt!!

I went back to work before you answered and did get it closely to the way you explained. Only I was able to lift the spring up and place it onto the brush brkt by sliding the spring to the top of the brkt. Thanks for your tip.
What a pain..
Yea. Never again will I pull the bolts clear out of the starter. Here's some pics..

I use one of those scribes that has an L bend in the one end like a hook to pull the brush spring up in order to remove the brush from the guide. I use a pair of duck bill pliers to reinstall the brush into each guide while holding the spring with the scribe hook. Like anything mechanical, the first time is the hardest until you get a system going. After that you can do it easily. Some 5/16 course thread nuts will work on the long bolts while handling an assembly then remove them just before installation.

I use an old choke cable cut off about 4 inches below the knob then bend a hook on the end, been using this for 20 plus years .

I just took mine apart. If you push the brushes all the way up against the springs until they are pushing against the side of the brush they will stay there. Then once everything is assembled you can just push them down to the amature and the springs go where they need to be.
