1929 Manual Wiper Attachment
Does anyone have a picture of how the wiper blade attaches to the wiper arm? Mine is held on with a cotter pin. It is very loose and does not look correct at all. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: 1929 Manual Wiper Attachment
Here are three photos of a new old stock manual wiper that was purchased in the original blue and white Ford box. The two close up photos are a little blurred, but you can see the rivet that attaches the blade to the arm is a tubular rivet. The Judging Standards, page 20-1, states, "Hand wipers were finished in gloss balck enamel with a nickle plated knob and a nickle plated tubular rivet (7/32" head diameter) holding the blade to the arm."
The knob and rivet on this nos wiper show evidence of being nickle plated. The wiper itself is black enamel, appearing to be dipped, but is not real high gloss, which could be from age. Dave Lopes |

Thank you very much for the pictures. Now I realize I also have the wrong blade itself.

Yes, the wiper blade has two pieces of black rubber.
The blade has: TRICO DEC14,20 PAT PEND USA but with no spaces between words. I checked two other hand wipers, one that came off a mid-'28 Roadster Pickup, both used and a bit rusty. Both had the same printing, but one was printed "upside down" in comparison to the others. Both of the used wipers had two black rubber blades with the tubular rivets for attachment. Sorry I couldn't photograph the original box, it's in the attic and I can't get there. Dave Lopes |

Dave,
Forgot to ask about the hand knob, do you know how to remove it? My wiper assembly is good...except for the knob. Dudley |

Re: 1929 Manual Wiper Attachment
Dudley,
I do not know how the knob is attached, threaded or pressed on. I don't want to put any marks on the one I photographed, but it does not want to tunr. Can't answer for sure. However, a good plater will plate just the knob for you. While I have not used one, many people would use the "hand plater" for this sort of item. Several brands out there, Caswell being one. Hopefully, others on the board will chime in with their experiences with hand plating. Dave Lopes |
