1940 ford bumper...
Are the front and rear bumpers the same on a 1940 passenger car? Someone told me that they were the same... seems unlikely, but possible.
I have one bumper, but don't know if it is front and/or rear. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Sedan and Coupe are the same, I am not sure about woodey or sedan delivery bumpers. Bumper brackets are different for standard and deluxe.

Re: 1940 ford bumper...
Also, genuine OEM 40 Ford coupe and pass car bumpers have 2 raised ridges on the back.

Re: 1940 ford bumper...
All 40 passenger cars, wagons and sedan deliveries use the same FRONT bumper. 41 half tons and sedan deliveries use this FRONT bumper also.
At the rear, all 40 Coupes, sedans and converts use the same bumper from the FRONT except installed on REAR. The REAR wagon is by itself, but the flatter style REAR pickup from 40 and 41 is virtually the same shape but the inner bolt holes are different spacing than the wagon. I believe the REAR delivery is unique, someone help me out on this. All OEM Henry bumpers in 40 have a pair of raised ridges on the back side. Most are about one and a half inches apart but I have seen some that are spaced even further apart. The repops are smooth. All Henry 40 bumpers are SPRING steel, as are the braces (brackets). To my knowledge the repop parts are not. Last, many 39's run the 40 style bumper. I believe 39s have a horizontal groove centered on the outer face with a blue accent color originally in the groove (at least on Deluxe, not sure on Standard). All 40 bumpers are smooth face and none had a Ford script stamped in them. RPM |

Re: 1940 ford bumper...
19fordy--- i have a 41 script bumper without the ribs. it has been rechromed and has pits on the inside. i am sure its original unless somebody reproduced them in the 40`s or 50`s. i have had it for 20 years this way. i`ve got two other 41 script original bumpers with the ribs. to my knowledge 40 bumpers have only been reproduced in the last 25 yrs.

Most (maybe all) 41 bumpers have the wide spaced ribs on the back side.

Re: 1940 ford bumper...
I had bought a new front bumper for my '40 Sedan. While waiting for my new '41 script rear bumper to arrive I took the old front and mounted on the rear without a problem. All parts on my car were original when I got it.

Re: 1940 ford bumper...
Has anyone had trouble centering the rear bumper on a 40 sedan? There are no adjusting slots. My bumper is 1 1/2" to the right, brackets are new drake parts. Can the frame be that far off? Thanks Chuck S.
