you could ask Greyhound Bus Lines if the oil was drained and if it were put in a crate w/ the shifter off.......Fed EX may also ship in a wooden crate...I shipped a deck lid across the country and they put it in a box length-wise to new york....also shipped fenders via greyhound to penn.. good luck

Deuceman,
For what it is worth I ship a 3 or 4 transmissions a month
and here's how I do it....
I get a large plastic tote with a snap on lid....usually about
$8.00. I cut a chunk of 3/8 plywood to make a floor in the tote....kind
of spreads the weight out. I then block the trans in place and drill
3/8 dia holes thru the plywood floor and the bottom of the tote on
either side of the trans in the front and back. I fasten the trans in
place with heavy duty cable ties...the ones that zip up and lock in place.
I run the cable tie over the trans and out the holes in the bottom and
back up thru then zip the whole gamash together. This hooks the tote , the plywood floor and trans together nice and snug.
To secure the lid in place I drill (8) 1/4 holes around the perimeter
of the lid and lip of the tote and use smaller cable ties to fasten it in
place.
Total cost is $12- $15 and about 1/2 hour.
I use Fedex ground it's the best service for the money. Grey-
hound is good but sometimes the weight is an issue. Fedex ships out of
any Fedex Kinkos store.

I shipped a complete front axle from spindle to spindle with wishbone on Greyhound from Missouri to Florida. Just wrapped the sharp corners and hung a wire tied tag on it. Went right through.

Recently,a guy in southern California shipped me a 1936 Ford tranny. He boxed the trans in a similar manner as mentioned above and Fed-Exed it to my shop. The cost was reasonable(at least by today's standards).

I got one in the mail, Parcel Post, from a guy in WA, He stripped it down as much as possible; shift tower off, shifter out, mount/ujoint off, clutch fork and shaft/bearing removed, and then he built a box out of plywood, it turned out to still be a few pounds over the post offices limit of 70lbs, so he cut a step in the rear of the box where the small end was and it made the 70 lbs.
ended up being three boxes though;
1-tranny
2-shifter
3-all other parts

A little bit of work, but it made it possible to go through the US Mail, which is the cheapest way to go where I live.

I recieved a trans from Charlie packed this way,It arrived in good order.Incedently Sharlie rebuilt it aand it works great.I wish I had had him rebuild the trans in my 41 wdy.before I installed it.The 3rd gear syncro. is a bit worn and grinds when I try to shift too fast.

Charlie:

Quick note on FedEx. Not sure if you know this or would like to, but you can set-up an account with them on-line @ Fedex.com.

It works great, you get a little discount on shipping, plus & this is a big plus, they come to your house/garage/business and pick it up when you schedule it on-line.

They also provide you with all of the shipping slips/forms/sticky envelopes with clear face so the packing ticket shows outwardly.

I've had an account for about 2 years and it has saved me countless hours having to truck stuff to their depots to be shipped out.

Just something that I thought may help you out since you mentioned you do a lot of shipping each month.

Best of luck & see you at '11 Hershey.
