Sad Day This Weekend
Twas a sad day today. A little background:
Back in June, 1972 Tropical Store Agnes came up the east coast of the US and dumped a lot of rain in a short period of time on the Mid-Atlantic states. This caused the Potapsco River to overflow its banks. Now I know that in other parts of our wonderful country, this happened to them as well. The bad thing is that my Granddad's 1935 Tudor Ford was in the garage and the river floated the wooden garage off of the car. (It got the 26 Chevrolet garage as well). The car stayed; everything else didn't. We tried to get my uncle, the owner of the car by this time (Granddad died in 1962) to clean out the car and restore it. Unfortunately, he could not make a decision and the car stayed out in the elements until this weekend. Since we knew that the car was way beyond any restoration, we gave it to a guy. He will most likely scrap it since it is nothing but rusted, rotted metal. Here it is on its way off of the property. Darn! |

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
That's a bummer a Tudor wasted some people won't let things go when they are aware there may be an interest in that vehicle. 40 years ago in NZ old cars were just that and I well recall approaching farmers about Models As sitting under trees "no son I'm gunna do her up" years later the same car rusted way in the same place farmers are the worst for not letting go!

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
In 1986 I was thrilled to own one third of what's there for $400 . Things changed and I was forced to let it go for $500, three months later. Still miss it today.

I wonder if he would settle for doubling his profit?
At least the car is being moved from the field, hopefully to an interested party for restoration. As has been said above, it could have just continued a slow peaceful deterioration in the field and be lost forever. |

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
plenty of life left in that car for the right person. I've seen much worse 32-34 Coupes pieced together with scraps. Foolish to scrap that car!!

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
That looks like the condition of my 36 Cabriolet when I hauled it home. I think it was used as a bulkhead in a stream in Illinois. My wife met me in the driveway and said, "You paid money for that?" It took 10 years, but as you can see from my Avatar, it turned out great. If I start it up, my wife is outside right away and wants to go for a ride.

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
I truly hope the guy can do something with it. Unfortunately the underside is like lace cheese. Everything from about two inches up is very thin and mostly perforated. We always wanted to restore this car. But now that I am moving to Florida, I just don't have the time or means to do it.

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
Almost all outdoor cars are in that condition in my neck of the woods. Just have to install a floor pan and any required patch panels, standard operation procedure. In fact that car would be a very big head start! Most of my cars (coupes) were ex dirt track race cars and striped using cutting torches. A little more of a challenge because everything that can be unbolted is missing and the floors cut out along with the sub-rails and most of the interior is cut up. But, they can be saved, just takes a little effort.

In 1977 I located a nice original one owner '35 tudor slant back sedan on Frederick Ave near Catonsville. I wound up buying that car in the early '80's and still own it today. I have to wonder what that young lady, standing in front of the trailer, is thinking about as she looks at that car?

Re: Sad Day This Weekend
John, this car was very near you. It was on River Rd, just east of Ellicott City. Granddad died in 1962 and my uncle inherited the car (as well as the 26 Chevrolet). Uncle could not ever make a decision and he had many offers to buy the car. He chose to leave it and it "was on the list" of things to do. No one, even family members were able to move Uncle off of center court. Sad but true.
I suspect this may be the car you are talking about. |
