Default Touring with a GoPro?

There has been recently a few posted YouTube filmed tours made by Barners. Nice addition to Barner participation with their model A. It's cool!!!

What I'd like to know is:
The model number that most use, cost, how mounted, where to get best buy and.....does it take rocket science edgmakation to operate it, edit it and post it? What's all needed?

Thanks

All I know is, if you use the suction cup mount to mount the gopro to a Model A windshield, your video will be very blurry until you shut the motor off.

Ed I've just used my iPhone 6 mounted to my wife's hand, they work great because they filter out the vibration.

Well, I'm SOL there, I don't have any of my wives anymore and I have an old style flippy phone.

I've been doing a lot of research and until I get to Best Buy or somewhere else that have electronic GEEKS, I can only assume I'm learning anything.

Most of what I've seen, the lens is just behind the driver centered.

I too use my nagagator to take video. It helps to loosen the mufler clamp to blockout background noise.

Any of the gopros do a good job, the newer ones (version 3 and newer) are a smaller form factor and handle light/dark better. I use a 3+ model with a 32GB memory card, probably can get 1.5 hours of HD recording. I have one of the sticky tape mounts stuck to the back window in my coupe. They are easy to use, but you'll need to learn to run some editing software to piece it all together.

I've used the GoPro Hero 4 for the videos I've done. The suction cup attached to the windshield will work but you can get some vibrations. It is nice to have it ready to go so you can turn it on and off as needed.

Aloha,
I used my go pro and the suction cup and stuck it to the back window, and it looks great, the angle of view on the go pro is almost 180 degrees and being such a wide angle you don't notice the shake. Worked great for me.

Fantastic!!! Thanks...I enjoyed that greatly. That would make anyone want to get out and go right now!!! I would probably do that right now if I had your weather. Love your interior also.

Thanks again

I'm thinking about getting the new GoPro Hero...one that I can afford at the moment attaching it to the back window.

Might be too much for me to handle.........That GoPro download is free and I like free things. Since it's free, if it doesn't look like it's meant for me, I can always seek something else out.

I'll go with the suction cup also. Seems it can go anywhere.

Had to watch that again....love the music. Was that added during editing or was it being played during the trip?

Gosh, I'm thinking we need a thread dedicated to model A videos.
Another camera I use a lot is this;
https://www.amazon.com/Mobius-Action.../dp/B00DP1WYD2
Not as tough as a gopro, or submersible, but take really nice video. They are smaller and a lot cheaper. You have to get a little more inventive for mounting however. A word about resolution, I record in 720P (not 1080) and I use 60 FPS (frames per second) not 30. 720 still gives a great picture, most people's screens can't take advantage of the higher resolution anyway, and 60 fps gives a smoother video when there's lots of movement, and an option for better slo-mo if you want to edit it that way. BTW, youtube has some editing tools built in that are free to use.

They came real handy when we needed to keep ice to put on the carb when it would start to vapor lock. We didn't have any room for a cooler!

I've become quite edjamakated these past two days....and nights, reading reviews, watch the videos that have been posted, I've decide what to get, now what's remaining is when.

There are quite a few tutorials on youtube for GoPro and there models and how to do this and that. I wanted to make sure I still had enough brain cells to absorb what I was reading, pictures helped a lot too.

Me, I like the Hero Silver, but mine is packed away from our last home move and i have not found it again, so far. It cost me around $300 as best I recall. I started with the 960 and it was much, much cheaper and easier to use, but without all the wifi gadgetry. They do not make it anymore, but it was a good product for the novice. I also have a HERO and I simply hate the thing as it fails quite often. (Most recently at the local Peach Fest where I really wanted to film the wonderful rendition of America the Beautiful and our national anthem done there.) The editing is the most difficult thing, but the new HERO also has the battery as an internal one and you can't replace it. Like say, I loved my 960 better than all the gizmos on any other GoPro. Simplicity was what I liked the best about it.

I have used many and made lots of diy camera mounts for my GoPros. I plan to purchase a steering column flashlight mount for my Model A and then take a piece of PVC tubing and heat it up to make the middle part flat, but the two ends still round to be pushed into the flashlight holder. I can then stick on one of the mounts for the GoPro and use it there or I can simply drill holes and insert a 1/4X20 bolt to use to mount the camera with. If this works out, the unit would be easy to remove and put away when not in use. I have not tried this diy project out so far, so I am not certain it will work or not. If it does, then I'll post some video when I can in using it.

Me, I believe the flip camera had advantages and was simplistic and good until they started changing the programming works to it all the time and finally stopped selling it. That said, the GoPro is in a league all it's own when it comes to dependability, durability and quality. I just wish it was still as simple to operate as the old 960 was and that editing was more simplistic for the novice.

Taking video is an art form. For every 10 minutes of good video shown on YouTube, there is usually an additional 15 minutes of pure crap. Not everyone wants to see 15 minutes of road stipes when a motorcycle runs down the road or when a Model A speeds along. One has to develop a sense of really catching the viewer's attention in what they film. It is not all that easy for the most part, but it means the difference between a good video and a really, really good video.

The cost goes up dramatically with GoPro equipment added to the camera. Nothing is all that chape in their accessories departments. Me, I love diy camera mounts, so I have made many over the years. I love the magnetic mounts more than any, but you have to be careful in how you apply them or scratches can happen to what they are mounted on.

Me, I'd advise the Hero Silver for anyone who really wants a good camera with the least amount of glitches from the GoPro collection.

Here are some diy mounts that can easily be adapted to a Model A. The super clamp and a bar made of aluminum can actually be used to show the car from the side as you drive. The biggest issue with many of the GoPro cameras is the noise level of outside wind and such, but a "dead cat" or microphone cover can eliminate much of that effect. The 960 was more adaptable with outside mikes than the more recent versions of GoPros seem to be.

These videos are only being shown to show that any variety of diy camera mounts can be made up for a GoPro camera. Most are cheap to make and give a different approach than just the normal videos shown with a camera. Each could easily be adapted for use on a Model A Ford.

A diy magnetic camera mount:

A monopod mount:

A mirror mount would work on a Model A:

One of my favorite mounts for a Gopro camera:
https://youtu.be/I1_P7cLtFp8

A pan-tilt unit gives you control and is useful for different video shots:
https://youtu.be/Chmtb_I2NEw

This video was done with a diy spinner mount I made that had a magnetic base and allowed the camera to spin at will as I drove:

Missed this post.....Yes, I think it would be great to have a sticky thread for members to post their Touring videos for all to enjoy..............So much work is put into creating a video, they all need to be shared....IMO.

Yessir, about 1,000 miles each way. Drove both directions in two days.

Day 1 was quite a challenge. Left at 4AM and we had some minor problems (gas gauge leak, & a lot of vapor lock) and our traveling partner had the weld on his muffler break so we had to find a shop with a welder. We didn't get into Raton, NM until about 7:30 that night when we had planned to be there around 4PM. And that was after running unmentionable speeds to get across the 90 miles of desert before darkness set it.

We came back by ourselves & had no problems. The final day was a short 5 hour drive from Amarillo. It was a fun trip! We usually take my Sedan on longer trips for the space. We took Logan's Coupe this time which is a much smoother ride, but was very limiting on space. We realize now we will have to take the small trailer we have to tow behind us for some more space.

I believe I would go to the GoPro forums and check out which camera has the least complaints about use before I plopped down any cash on any of them these days. Being more expensive in the line up of cameras offered from GoPro does not necessarily mean they are the better cameras of the lot. The complaints from users on those forums tells a lot, for sure.

I've done just that for hours....best part of the opinions are positive for the Session4, it cost a few bucks more for the new Sessions. The GoPro Hero 3&4 really was too much for my needs and cost way over my budget. I checked out a few other small cameras also, kept coming back to GoPro.

You guys, it is a Model A. Don't get too crazy!

I use the mount that came in the packaging and sit it on the top of the dash rail and the windshield when it is opened. Put some rubber bands on the mount to keep it from moving.

This is an example of the video I get from it.

I may be wrong, but I thought that the black plastic piece which originally came with the GoPros had been discontinued on the newer versions. I have used it for all sorts of mount applications in the past and it indeed comes in handy in many places. Each mount is actually just a tool and having different types for different situations is always a good thing if you want to do videos which stand out even better than the ordinary. I love making up diy camera mounts, as each is an individual tool and simply add to the arsenal of options.

Unfortunately, the camera or the camera mount is seldom as much of an issue as is what it all takes to have a good editing program for the best end results.

Fuel pump with a stromberg. Once he wrapped the gas line in insulation and used premium gas, the issue resolved itself.

This is not a finished camera mount product, but the photos can easily show you how to make a GoPro (or other camera) mount for a Model A that should easily mount and be removed quickly when necessary.

I got this flashlight mount from Mac's (other vendors sell them too). I didn't need the flashlight, but instead I decided to add a 1 1/4" piece of pvc pipe to make a cheap diy camera mount with. I can cut the pipe at the length I wish. I can leave it round or flatten the end piece as it suits me. I can also make several for different applications if I wish. For security purposes, I can pull it out and take it with me or hide it somewhere else when i am done with it, too. I decided to paint over the white pvc plastic tube.

A 1/4X20" bolt can be added to the mount or you can use the flattened area to mount the stock GoPro plastic pieces to. You would have to flatten out a longer area though to do that, I suspect. Any rate, pvc is cheap so if you make a mistake it is easy to trim down another piece and start over.

Like say, I would have shot a photo of the holder and mount on the steering wheel of my pickup, but it is taking the paint too long to dry today because of the high humidity.

The black paint was drying slowly as we have a high humidity locally today. I am not such a fan of the color of the metal mount, so I may do something about that later, but as a quick and easy diy system, this should help anyone who is just looking for a different way to mount their camera to their Model A.

If it works well when i am done, I'll post and if I run into glitches I'll also post that. I just enjoy playing about with diy ideas that strike me as dooable and cheap.

Enjoy.

Hey 31 A, I use a Flip, $25 on Ebay. Quick, easy and fast. Not near as good picture as the gopro, but good enough for what I do with it. The gopro is a huge file and hard to deal with. The flip has it's own software and I put my movies out is a matter of minutes, where my grandson takes a week putting a movie together with his gopro. Here is the playlist of our club's outings, all done with a Flip. They don't make them anymore, but you can still get new ones. Here is the playlist of our club's outings.

This is far more than you want to watch. I don't put that good music on mine though.

One of the biggest problems is external sound or audio interference from the wind. A "dead cat" or mikeover makes a world of difference, as does an external microphone on a GoPro at the case for a GoPro camera.

Good luck with learning the ins and outs of the GoPro. They are indeed a good-great camera to have.

Still in learning mode but realized that trip didn't come out too well. I'll mount it to the windshield next time. All that could be seen was the back of my head and the dashboard and distant places speeding by. No wind interference though and Sarah is far more quiet on camera than in my ears and I'm mostly deaf.

Here are some photos of a magnetic camera mount I just made up for my pickup truck. With the metal back of the pickup, a magnetic mount can just about be hooked almost anywhere to get some different photos or video with a GoPro camera. Here is what I used to assemble it for use.

1. Get your stock GoPro plastic mounts and hook on the flat base mount to the center of the Harbor Freight magnetic tool dish. (They make different sizes and you can pick these up for a couple of bucks at Ace Hardware or other places besides HF.) I just happened to have one from HF to piddle about with. (Photo # 1).

2. Attach the plastic base mount to the metal magnetic tool dish with the adhesive it comes with and then click on the curved plastic camera mount for the GoPro. (Photo # 2).

3. Pull off the rubber base to the bottom of the magnetic tool dish/bowl. The magnet is strong enough to hold up the GoPro, but if you need a stronger one, simply break off the round magnet at the bottom of the dish and glue on an old radio speaker magnet. They are generally stronger. For any outside use as shown with the camera and mount attached at the gas tank, I always make a lanyard out of fish line to attach somewhere so that if the magnet failed and didn't hold right, then you don't lose your camera. (Photo # 3).

4. If you fear scratches on your paint by this method, just put on a piece or two of packing tape over the magnet itself and trim it down. I have used magnetic mounts at speeds well over 70 MPH with this packing tape method and never had a mount move on me or scratch my vehicles. You can leave on that large rubber cover shown if you feel it leaves the magnet field strong enough to work as a camera mount, but I would not recommend this for any outside mounting as the rubber cover is actually pretty thick. (Photo # 4).

5. Try out some variations as to where you mount this in your vehicle. You still may have to play about with the actual GoPro camera to get it angled for the field of vision you wish to capture. With the plastic curved mount attachment, you can move the camera up and down easier to allow for positioning. (Photo # 5, 6, 8 & 9)).

Just one of many ways to mount a GoPro for interesting photos and videos.

The recent video I posted was filmed largely with a "gimbal camera." This is a kind of miniature steady-cam, specifically designed to eliminate vibration. There are multiple models available. The one I used was called "Osmo," made by the company DJI. Some of the other shots in that video were obtained with a drone, called the "Phantom 4," also from DJI. Drone's aside, there are a lot of good tricks one can do with economical gimbal cameras.

And, unfortunately, I did put mine to music, which will not fit the taste of many.

I would have recommended iMovie on the iphone. It, too, is free. But it's much more comprehensive and has some really nice features. It's also more user friendly, in my opinion.
