Autolite 4100
I have a stock 1965 Mustang 289 4v. With an Autolite 4100 carburetor. I can't seem to find the correct gaskets to mount the spacer to the manifold and the carburetor to the spacer. I have tried the major suppliers and they are all different.

Re: Autolite 4100
I have a 4100 on a 302CI. I just use the generic square gaskets from Autozone. Been on the car probably 5 years or so.

Re: Autolite 4100
Thanks for the reply !
By "generic square gaskets" do you mean gasket material around the perimeter of the square opening on the manifold and on no other surfaces? |

Re: Autolite 4100
most of the generic gaskets won't seal the perimeter properly, try CJ Pony parts

Re: Autolite 4100
I just re-read your post. I do not have a spacer and its bolted directly to an Edelbrock Manifold.

The gasket at the top surface of the intake manifold should match whatever style intake manifold you are using. If you're using a spacer the gasket on top of it should match the shape of the spacer. FYI: Phenolic spacers were/are often used to help keep the carburetor cooler, more isolated from the (usually cast iron) intake manifold. Last edited by dmsfrr; 04-20-2015 at 10:46 PM. |

Below is a link to Walker Products carburetor parts. Page 8 under the Holley 4150 and 4160 four barrel section shows the gasket I think you need. Walker part number G849. They also show gaskets under the 4100 Autolite section, but don't show the one you need. Only the one with a square hole in the middle instead of 4 holes. Should be able to order them online. I have ordered parts from them before without any issues. Sal https://buy.walkerproducts.com/carbu...omponents.html |

Re: Autolite 4100
art,
Is the difference you're concerned about the diameter of the 4 throttle plate holes? I looked at the '66 4bbl 289 6ZE Autolite I have, it has "1.08" cast into the front drivers side and the bores at the base of the throttle plate measure almost 1 & 7/16th. inch dia. It seems many of the generic square bore replacement gaskets have larger holes in them (1 & 5/8). Depending on which intake manifold you have, the #G849 gasket scicala gave a link to (above) will be a better one, note the larger width of the gasket between the throttle plate holes as compared to the one to the right of it. . Re: Autolite 4100
You didn't say anything about rebuilding the carb. but a word of caution with the Walker kit. It doesn't include the secondary diaphragm, operating lever and rod. I found that out the hard way with mine in pieces on the bench. I had to return it and get a different kit. The kit brand was GP Sorensen. Since they didn't list my car I got a kit for an Autolite 4100 for a '64 model Galaxie 352 from AutoZone and it had 2 choices of base gaskets.

Re: Autolite 4100
the gasket that is the hardest to find is the one between the manifold and spacer. This is because of the way the spacer extends out back for the pcv hose, the gasket has to seal this area too. That spacer is still available and it comes with both gaskets, so I have to believe the gaskets would be too. CJ Pony sells the spacer, so they sould sell the gaskets too. Also, try Ford, I bought the spacer new from them about 10 years ago, they may still carry the gaskets. The carb to spacer gasket only has to seal the outer perimeter of the carb, you will notice in places the sealing area is less than 1/8 inch, but it is critical that the gasket completely seals this area

Re: Autolite 4100
I believe the sides of the 4100 carb do not match up to the Edlebrock intake.
probably the best idea is to get one of the stacked carb spacers that has about 4-5 plates and about 4-5 gaskets. its meant to cool the carb, but at the same time it solves the overlap issue/mismatch between the 4100 and the Edelbrock. Which manifold is it? F4B, performer, torker, or what? The F4B is like the factory Cobra intake. The Performer is almost identical to the factory 4 barrel cast iron intake. The torker is a single plane. http://shop.mr-gasket.com/carburetor...at-shield.html |

Re: Autolite 4100
I bought a rebuild kit from Mikes Carbs.
http://www.carburetor-parts.com/4100...tor_c_171.html In my case I had a 4100 1.12 version on an A code 289. Ran but too much carb and plugs were sooty. Had trouble getting a good seal on the sides between spacer and manifold. As others have stated only an 1/8 of metal on the spacer. I was tempted to silicone the darn thing. Ended up switching to an edelbrock intake and carb. |

Re: Autolite 4100
Sorry, I confused you with another poster who said its an Edelbrock.
Best thing in your case is the factory 4 hole 1 " aluminum spacer with the pvc port out the back and two stock Ford gaskets. I have a 66 289 A-code four barrel with the Autolite 4100 - 1.08 carb, I think its a great carb and would have no desire to change to a Holley or Edelbrock. The 1.12 version was on the K-code 289 HiPo engine and also on a bunch of grocery-getter 390 engines. I've also had my hands on a rare version, I think it was 1.16 but I haven't seen it in years, its at Alex Denysenko's place.. MoneyMaker Racing. He runs S/S class stock and has to use a 289 block and a 4100 carb. Pulls the front wheels and runs in the 10's in the quarter mile. http://www.moneymakerracing.net/ |

Re: Autolite 4100
Why not get some gasket material and make a gasket?

Re: Autolite 4100
When you find the gaskets that satisfy the fit top and bottom, spray both sides with WD 40. Soak it well, and the carb can be removed for tinkering about a dozen times. Use 1/4 drive to tighten the carb nuts, they want very little torque.

Re: Autolite 4100
Borg Warner used to make kits that worked well on the 4100. And they're easy carburetors to rebuild. Just take close-up pictures of all the linkages before you take it apart. Also the guts as you get into it.
If you're close to Long Island, NY, try Allstate Carburetor in Islip. They're reasonable and turn the carbs around quickly. |
