Default FOUND!! V8-60 sedan

Found this 1938 sedan back in July on Craig's list.. Had been stored in a small, dry one car garage for 53 years.. It has the V8-60 with 34,000 miles on it when found...

My plans?? Well most of you will probably be mad but I always say; The best Hot Rods are made from the nicest original cars.. It will have to wait till I finish my coupe, but it will keep it's original paint and interior and only have a motor and trans upgrade.. I'm excited to start on my lucky find...

The V8 60 is really under-powered. They make great sprint car engines though. Maybe you can trade someone for a 221 CI V8 that wants to build a sprinter. Great find. keep us updated.

I think you mean midget. If you put one of those in a sprint car, you'd be guaranteed last place every time. They were competitive with the small Offy's in midgets, though.

That sure is a nice car though; I am constantly amazed at what is still out there. Never give up looking, I guess.

I'll say what others are thinking: they are only original once. Maybe a hopped up flattie, but original otherwise?

I would think a much higher percentage of V8-60's survived like this than the bigger engined cars because people got sick and tired of the sluggish performance and stuck them away. It seems to me that the last couple of really nice "Barn Finds" on here have been '60's.

Very cool find! If it was mine, I'd build a hopped up big flathead V8 for it, about 276 cubic inches, put in a 39 transmission, change the rear-end gears to 3.78, put hydraulic brakes on it and have a ball.

I believe the rears in most V8-60 cars were 4.44 . . . just WAY too low for any real highway cruising.

All this stuff could be easily done, while you preserve/keep ALL the original running gear - and have it for future generations.

It didn't run but the motor was free after a 52 year sleep.. The 81 year old gentleman parked it when I-75 came through his area.. I probably will put an overhead valve engine with an automatic in it.. I've been fooling with model A's for a long time and at my age I'm thinking I want a nice comfortable ride with this one.. I want it low but I want it to appear stock otherwise.. I'm a hot rodder at heart but I like the way the standard looks both outside and inside so I will leave both alone...

So not true. If it was to get a non-flathead engine, needs something in the lightweight category, like a 5.0 Ford engine.

BOY, is that a beauty, my first car that I could license and insure when I was 15 was a twin to that, it had the 21 stud 85hp engine. I wish I still had it. Walt

Not a SBC fan, so that wouldn't work!!! You can put a Small Block Ford in about anything if you really want to, I have put two in a Focus, one a 5.0 and the other one a 351W.

Probably will be SBC with a 3spd automatic(TH350).. They are just so easy to install and cheap.. I want to keep the original column and wheel but may use a 1940 column and wheel for the column shift.. I want the engine to resemble a mid-50's engine with orange paint and script valve covers.. A lot of flatheads were removed when Chevy introduced their "HOT" little V8 in 1955... Ah, the 50's....

Had a '38 standard V860 back in the 50's only a 4dr.

Hope you are planning on doing an upgrade to the brakes.

I like it, I just got mine a few weeks ago. Not as nice as yours, or as original, and sat for many years but not 53 years (only around 40). Mine does have a long family history.

A hot rod has a flathead in front and tools out back!
A street rod has a f¥*%ing Chevy in front and a can o polish in back!
Please don't put a bloody monkey motion engine in it. You'll kill the poor thing. If you want comfy mile eating easy going torque, build a nice 276 flathead with an isky 1007 or 1007b or L100 cam pair of heads and two carbs on regular dual inlet. Include a correctly curved, key word being correctly here, that red capped aftermarket stuff ain't anywhere near correctly curved ( it has a sbc curve! ) ignition. Msd one is better. Use that bloody sbc Delco points distributor and get Charlie NY to curve it to flathead spec. Only usefull part on that engine.
You can slap a C4 Auto on the back of any year engine, and this auto is the slenderist trans, slides in with least amount of cutting. A later flathead can be fitted on the front of a later AOD trans. If you feel the need for a slush box.
You may already know this stuff I spec, but if I didn't say it here I would not be doing my duty to your car.
Martin.

PLEASE PLEASE don't kill the car. Mild hot rodding as I've described I'd be ok with. Just don't turn it into a another sbc powerd street rod. If you want to do that, do it to a shitter, your car is too good for that.
This comes from a hot rodder born an bread.

You don't have to be like that.

It would be a travesty to put a chevy engine in that car.

You know, this thread isn't about flatheads, if you don't like what I'm doing to my car I understand.. I don't particularly like flatheads and I think most were replaced when the overheads came out.. I'm old enough to remember when flatheads were King but I also remember them being replaced because they were to slow.. If you guys want to run flatheads I respect that but in the mid 50's I also remember Chevys, Cadillacs and Olds overheads replacing a lot of the flatheads and that's the era of hot rodding I'm shooting for.. My build will not have tilt, air, a console or other street rod items but it will have an overhead and probably an automatic.. Sorry if some of you don't like it....

I think the issue may be that this is a flathead site. Lots of us have had experience with many type of engines in Hot Rods (including Scooder) and respect them all, but this is a flathead site so you are going to get inputs on flatheads. The HAMB is geared toward a variety of engines. I am first and for most a Hot Rodder, but my personal leanings are I will not mess with a restorable car. All of my cars (the Hot Rod ones) are ex-dirt track cars that are not candidates for restoration. I enjoy and take pride in bringing these lost causes back to life.

JSeery, you are exactly right.. Silly me bad mouthing flatheads in the flathead section of the Ford Barn.. I didn't mean to offend anyone and I apologize.. Flatheads ARE cool and it's good that there are people who keep them running...

Milo,
Did you really just tell me to shut the f##k up!!??!!??
"didn't mean to offend" ??
Gota remember, you showed us Ford flathead V8 guys a really sweet car in very tidy condition, you then told us Ford flathead V8 guys your gonna hook the engine and put a brand X engine in it! I think we were very polite in our opinions. What reaction did you expect?
I certainly didn't expect your reaction to my post.
Martin.

I see you are selling off the original pieces from this survivor on the swap meet.

In response to one of your ads:
You have stated in your ad that the V-8 60hp radiator and the V-8 85hp radiator are the same.
They are not the same and they are not interchangeable.

Thanks Milo for the picture. I am new to all of this, I am not sure of the difference in the stainless trim. Also I like the pic you posted of the lowered 38. Enjoy your project

Hey FrankWest, it was on Craig's list for a couple weeks, but it didn't show well because it was crammed into a one car garage with no electric and 52 years of junk piled around it.. I rubbed through the dirt with my finger and saw shinny paint so I decided to take a chance.. He couldn't find the keys so it made it difficult to move because of the locked steering wheel.. I had to crawl through the back seat and carefully remove the in tacked cardboard to pop open the trunk.. Took the door lock to a locksmith who made a key and it also fit the steering lock.. Drilled the trunk lock out and replaced with new lock and key... It also had the tool pouch with tools and jack with separate base.. I felt like I won the lottery with this find.. You always hope to find one like this... I'm sorry a lot of you don't like what I'm doing with it but I'm excited to start on it...

Milo, hope I am not a bother but could you please post a picture of the tools and jack? I just don't know where else I would find someone with an original car so similar to mine. Thanks

Hey, You did real Good!
My car is a 1933 and has all original power train so I drive pretty slow..
In fact, it feels like I am going 90mph when I go 35 mph.
If you plan to install all that power in you car, make sure the car won;t fall apart when you reach 125mph!

Funny Munsters episode

The tool kit is missing the screwdriver and pliers. Otherwise looks good.

I have to agree with Martin, Before you install the SBC, re-think the suspension and brakes. Also the rear axle might pose a problem with that much power. Now you can solve all those problems with an aftermarket frame and $$$$$$$. Or a nice 258/C4. I have a nice 248 59A for sale.

Ol'Ron, You are right, I plan on upgrading the suspension, rear end and brakes.. I want to keep the outside and inside stock appearing with it's original paint and worn interior.. I want a stock dash and keep the stock column and wheel or maybe a 40 column and wheel...
