Column lock is prewar Ford as far as can be told. Usually the horn button and wheel best way to pin it down, 36 and before are the cruder type. In 37 the pitman went to roller, steer is easier than the gear type pitman. Look at mac VanPelt's site for drawings and probably part number to identify. Wheel should have Ford logo and/or KH stamped into the flats between the lug holes. Yes wheels could be '40 or later, usually the Mercury, lincolin and pickup were wider for bigger tires. I have had 4", 4 1/2", 5" width

If the whhels are 16" Then they are "40s Ford" I use this a s a generic term, the exact year or model could be pinpointed with more information.
If 15", then they are f100 or Mercury, more detail info needed for exact identification.

Be careful, the wheel shown is designed to fit a flat hub. Model A are stepped, with a raised surface in the middle. The wheel will go on but will be distorted if tightened.

The column drop shown looks like it has been cut down, it should be the other way up and support the column off the bottom of the dash. It looks like someone has cut it short and has used it as a steering lock and ignition switch bracket.

A genuine 1940 ford rim has a 90 degree bend on the backside of the rim just below the bead. It's hard to explain and i don't have a photo.

================================================== ======

As 19Fordy says, the '40 Wheel has 90 degree bends on the backside,
just as the front side of the wheel has.
The '41-'48 wheels are Slanted on the backside of the wheel hoop,
otherwise they are about the same wheels up to '48 for Ford.

Here is a picture, look close and you can see the backside difference.

I'm pretty sure my rims do not have 90 degree bend on rear.
but I'll check it tomorrow.
At least now I know that the steering column is from a Ford
thanks for answers

Kinda Looks like 35-36 but yes, has been shortened to suit a taller dash, so it may have been a 37-38 originally ?. certainly of some value with the key & lock operative.

The column drop appears to have been installed upside down??

If I saw that red wheel on the ground at the swap meet, I would figure it to be a '42-'48 Merc 15". Most buyers would keep walking at that since 16"s now rule. In the sixties, the Merc wheels ruled because of the poor selection of 16" tires at that time. No longer tha case. The column drop was probably used inverted for some place to hang an ignition switch. Very likely that the steering lock doesn't work on that Model A. Good Luck: Fred A
