59A with 8ba distributor question
My dad is putting together a 59a engine and he wants to use a later timing cover and distributor. We are wondering what we need to use for a distributor hold down? Thanks!

Re: 59A with 8ba distributor question
Drill and tap a 5/16 hole in the cover to clamp the distributor.

I happen to agree but dad already has a vintage mallory he wants to use. I told him I have a rebuilt '42 crab distributor he can have.

Re: 59A with 8ba distributor question
The early Mallory's are very good distributors. Similar ti the Ford units with a vacuum brake

Re: 59A with 8ba distributor question
And, in fact, the early Ford V8 '32-48 distributor was based on Mallory design of dual point plate and vac brake system. The first generation '32 distributor was directly patented by Mallory himself, in fact. Current Mallory's bear no relationship to old USA Mallory in design features, quality, or advance characteristics and should be seen as cores for full rebuild and tuning before use on a flathead. A lot of things I have seen on those things fall on the spectrum between shoddy and appalling.
I think Old Mallory, meaning 2-piece cap type, is a good choice, although parts supply is a significant problem. |

On early Mallory parts
Iv found that if you keep your eyes pealed at swap meets you can get brand X Mallory’s for parts for penny’s on the dollar. Iv even scored nos parts for cheap. |

Re: 59A with 8ba distributor question
The Mallory trailer shows up every year at big runs like the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona. They have a table full of faulty distributors that have gone back to the factory. Here are distributors that technicians have at least LOOKED at, tested, fixed, and put back out for sale for less than half the original purchase price. Then it's off to Bubba's for his conversion and work. Voila. New Mallory that's been tested and tuned for a lot less than any of the cataloguer's purchase price.
