What do you think
Since I can't find ANY stainless bumpers anywhere I decided to paint my original rear bumpers with some Canadian Tire Chrome paint I had lying around.
What do you think ??? They actually turned out a lot better than I expected. Even my wife couldn't tell until I told her. This will have to do until someone has stock stainless bumpers again. |

Re: What do you think
You did real good !
Advice, not criticism ....Paint the bolt heads nice shiny gloss black. Original bolt heads were black. |

Re: What do you think
That looks great, but you need to move the black clamps to the other side of the support arms.

Re: What do you think
If you need a longer term "short term" solution, I've seen some chrome color powder coat come out pretty nice.

Re: What do you think
Good chrome is shiny. How about a coat of clear?

Re: What do you think
Looks good to me!
Now I have to ask... why do you want stainless? I'm asking because that was what I was thinking for mine, as its missing pretty much all the bumper hardware. While talking to one of the parts suppliers, they said that no one uses stainless, everyone wants chrome, so they stopped carrying the stainless bumpers. He also said that there as been some renewed interest in stainless. So, even though places like Bratton's list stainless bumpers in their catalog, are you saying that no one actually stocks them? Or are they not original in shape or some other reason to not be acceptable? Thanks! |

Re: What do you think
Little Dearborn lists bumpers in both Chrome and Stainless.

Re: What do you think
Keep in mind that stainless bumpers are not as strong as spring steel bumpers and the "color" is slightly different.

Re: What do you think
The bumpers look great! until you get what you want! :-) good job!
I have a question about the tail lights? The light stands look to be switched? The left side looks to angle left and the right looks to angle right? or is it just the photo? I thought the lights should be straight? I could be wrong, if so I need to change mine :-( Not being critical, you said what do you think kind of opens up things. The fix for your bumper problem looks very presentable! |

Re: What do you think
I thought they had gone out of business or, at least, moved, but their website shows them in business, with the same address. Google Street View shows that handy side parking gone, though.

Re: What do you think
Back in the 70's when I was raising a family and had no money, I covered my bumpers with 2 inch wide chrome tape. It looked ok from a distance. Yours look better, and to make it perfect you could paint the end area where the 4 rivet plate is gloss black, since Ford dipped that end of the 28-29 rear bumpers in black enamal.

Re: What do you think
I did take the rear bumpers to two very reputable platers in the Toronto area. One wanted $1000,00 a piece and the other $700.00 a piece, just for the rears. This is not a fine points car.
When speaking to many venders they had lots of chrome units but no stainless. All sold out as every one want stainless. The guy who used to make them is re tooling and should be sending units to venders in April so I am told. My neighbor has a recently restored 29 Roadster and his stainless units are impeccable. I will wait for the stainless but in the meantime I'm impressed with my cheapo spray on chrome. |

Re: What do you think
I would have bought the new chrome bunpers and when the stainless becomes available to you sell the chrome at a swap meet or on the fordbarn.. youll prob get close to what u paid if not all of it back..

Re: What do you think
I had new chrome bumpers I bought from Little Dearborn on the 30 roadster I sold last year that I installed 8 years ago and they still looked like new so I wouldn't rush to try and find stainless, My 29 coupe has stainless and the rears aren't curved like originals.

Re: What do you think
Look for "The Bumper Boyz" They are Mex-American and they have a large Tractor trailer that they travel all across the country with selling at swap meets etc. IIRC They're from California. The Story I heard is that they do their plating in Mexico which has few or none environmental laws and then bring them back over the border. The were at the Allentown meet in Jan. They're always looking for stuff to plate and sell. Their Ph# 1 800-815-9009

It's normal for the tailight stands for the right to slightly angle right ( but light be straight and same for the left. Not the other way around. These do look a little extreme and are probably repro stands... probably several suppliers of those and they don't always have the right profile and angle. Also, the tail light mounting stand bolt heads could stand to be painted to keep them from rusting. Looks okay for a driver and probably fits the budget for now. I would look for a nice chrome set or save up as opposed to the stainless... and as Tom said the backer bars should be behind the bumper and in front of the rear support. Happy motoring! Larry |
