T rear spring in the rear of model a??

Will a modelT rear spring work in a modelA. looking for a softer ride in my roadster

It will with spacers on either side of the spring. The T spring is narrower. It will lower the
car a bunch also so be aware of that.
Does you car have a Roadster spring in it already? Maybe you have the wrong spring if
you think it needs to be softened up.
If it has the correct spring you can take some leaves out of it to soften it up.

Anything can be made to work with enough effort but it would be much easier to just remove a leaf from the original spring.

Roadsters are supposed to have a 7-leaf spring, coupes & Tudors an 8-leaf spring, all others a 10-leaf spring. I suggest you find at least an 8-leaf spring and replace the 10-leaf with it.

The 10-leaf was for a sedan. The coupe had an 8-leaf and the roadster a 7-leaf. The roadster rear spring had a different (lower) profile than the others and a unique spring pack configuration.

Model A Springs of all usual layout come and go on Ebay. BUT - be sure you're getting a Model A spring - and that it has all the leaves.

More than once I've seen an "original" Model A front spring with (count 'em) six leaves. Read the description and this is from an original complete Model A and the seller is convinced this is "original."

Perhaps to him. All sources indicate that for the cars only a 10 leaf (standard) or 12 leaf (for cars of exceptional service requirement) was available from Ford.

There have been MANY substitutes made over the years including J.C. Whitney, Posie, Sacramento Ford and others. Some of these conform to the Ford drawings, others not so much.

I have spoken of a J.C. Whitney front spring of my ownership which fits the space between the spring perches perfectly, doesn't have the leaf corners "clipped", and is stiffer than you can imagine. I've considered this is one of a pair of repurposed trailer springs. It worked until I got something closer to original.

And this is not to run all of these substitutes down. Posie's springs are highly thought of in the rodder crowd which may have something to do with the unusual "lubrication pocket" built into each leaf.

So I guess the advice is "caviet emptor." Be sure you know what you're looking for and that what you're getting conforms to SOMETHING. The original Ford spring layout might be best - but you probably don't want a "mix & match."

It is possible to get a 100 lb. per inch spring rate with a stock spring.
This is a very soft "touring" ride good for a comfortable ride on normal streets and roads.

You have to do a lot of playing with a combination of leaves from a stock spring.
Always leave the 2 longest leaves in the combination.

Be sure your shocks are in good shape and hooked up when testing.
Be sure the individual leaves are clean of any rust and scale and sprayed with Moly Lube when assembling.

Check with Bert's in Denver. They will have the info and spring you need. As said above, you have the wrong rear spring now. Bill

A few thoughts:

If you take the spring apart, a few thoughts: Feather edging all of the leaf ends that stack on the main leaf makes them glide/work so much better and gives a smoother ride.

Using a T spring does lower the rear approx. 1.5"-2". If you swap in '26/'27 T rear cross member, it gets the rear even lower.

I think the T springs looks better, but I'm a hot rodder.

I just ordered 12 slider buttons from Posies to install in a stock rear spring. It is necessary to punch a .25" hole to receive each button. This is for my Tudor. My RPU has similar rear weight to a roadster. It had a 10 leaf and rode like a lumber wagon. This may have been necessary when it was a working truck. I got a Posies replacement and took it down to 7 leaves and it rides like a dream. By the way, as long as you don't mess with the main leaf, it will make no difference to the shackles.

I bought a new rear spring from Posies. It has reversed eyes and lowered the car 2". It has the large Teflon buttons.

Because the T spring is narrower, you would also have to use spacers at the shackles.
