1950 ford transmission help!!!
I have a 1950 Ford Custom 6 cylinder with a three speed on the column that I need your help/knowledge on fixing the transmission clutch linkage.
I just bought this car and have no knowledge of the mechanical history. Clutch pedal is on the floor (clear to the floor). The clutch pedal assembly (clutch pedal, U bracket that attaches to transmission) are not connected to the transmission. It appears that the bolt that operates the clutch and attaches to the clutch U bracket/pedal assembly has been broken of in the transmission housing. Is the left side of the transmission housing removable? Do you think that this can be repaired with the transmission still in the car with engine attached? Do I bite the bullet and remove the transmission and do the repair? Thanks in advance for your advice and knowledge!!!! |

Re: 1950 ford transmission help!!!
i would suggest you call C&G early ford parts and get a service manual so you can see what the linkage should look like. also join the early ford V8 club and get a membership roster and contact someone in the club in your area to help you sort things out

Re: 1950 ford transmission help!!!
The open drive of the '50 makes transmission removal so simple, I would not fight trying to do anything with it in the car. You don't know what your going to find in the transmission, and having it out allows you to inspect everything to get it all in tip top shape.

throwback:
Get the manual. You can remove the side cover without removing the transmission. |

Re: 1950 ford transmission help!!!
Thanks to all who provide a response. I went to Mac Van Pelts website and found parts drawings of the Clutch & Pedal Assembly. I did this because of the responses. I will check into the manuals and remove the transmission and other recommendations.
Thanks so much!! |

Re: 1950 ford transmission help!!!
I had a 50 V8 when I was in high school. Got good at changing transmission synchronizers, and water pumps.
See if you can get an old Motors Manual, lots of information in them. Bruce

Re: 1950 ford transmission help!!!
I've taken the side plate off of the trans of a 50 many times with the trans still in the car. Have the trans in neutral, remove the cover (don't forget to drain the fluid first), check the positions of the shifting forks. If I remember correctly the large one is in the front and you don't have to remember which way it faces. The small fork has to be facing the right direction as it is offset. If you have trouble keeping the forks aligned when installing, pack the shaft bosses with a thick grease to keep them from twisting during installation.
