Worm problems I got worm problems
How do you change the worm gear on the stearing shaft? does it need to be heated and than knocked off or should it just knock off?

Re: Worm problems I got worm problems
Put in press & press off, The DVD ,s avalible show how to fit new one by threading inside of shaft on a 2 tooth & use a bolt to pull new worm on, If using a press to fit you must grip the shaft near the worm end or it will bend, Just used the bolt type puller on two & work well. Just my 2 cents worth,

Re: Worm problems I got worm problems
This takes a special setup in the press to avoid damaging the shaft. I recommend finding someone who has such a setup, or sending it to Bratton's and paying them to do it.

Putting the shaft/worm into this pipe, I then tapped the pipe HARD on the ground until the shaft moved out of the worm. The pipe was the shoulder that the worm hit against. Inertia of the shaft carried it out of the worm. Now going back together with a new worm I have not yet explored. The thread/bolt idea seems like it should work. Joe K

Re: Worm problems I got worm problems
It seems like that would make your steering wheel sit about 1/8" higher.

Re: Worm problems I got worm problems
This is a fixture James Rogers made to hold the shaft while you press the worm on.

Re: Worm problems I got worm problems
I have installed timing gears on crankshafts by heating the gear to about 300 deg in the oven, slides right on. This would probably work for the worm gear.

Re: Worm problems I got worm problems
I installed a new worm with a press by temporarily tack-welding some supports to the shaft:
http://31ford.dougbraun.com/brakes/IMG_5817 http://31ford.dougbraun.com/brakes/IMG_5818 I used the piece-of-pipe-as-slide-hammer trick to get the old worm off. BTW, if you replace the worm, be sure that the upper and lower bearing races are OK. The upper one can crack if somebody didn't properly adjust that offset adjusting bolt. Doug
