33,34 anti squeak
In addition to the web material that goes between the top of the frame and the body on a 33,34, is there also supposed to be some anti squeak material at the side fastenings such as at the B pillars and the rear fender wells. Lots of information on previous posts but I couldn't find anything on this one.

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
For the 1934 Roadster 40-710 and according to Ford’s assembly draw SK-12001 they installed friction tape at the following points. The friction tape that Ford used is very similar to the black cloth friction hockey stick blade tape that I used to tape up many a hockey stick in my youth!
Between the hinge pillar and hinge pillar to sill brace Between the front body pillar and body to dash brace Between the body hinge pillar to the quarter belt rail gusset and body hinge pillar Between the front body pillar and pillar to floor brace Between the seat side shield and floor pan Between the front body pillar and pillar to floor brace Between the package tray and seat back brace bracket Between the package tray rear support and package tray Between the seat back brace and floor pan brackets |

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
The rear fenders and front fenders had welting between the body and fenders. If your going to buy welting Roy Nacewics at www.fordscript.com sells the correct period welting.

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
Steve,
All valuable information and greatly appreciated, but my primary interest is where the body fastens through the side of the frame as opposed to through the top of the frame. There are body fasteners through the side of the frame at the B pillars and at the rear fender wells. I am thinking there should be some anti squeak material in these areas but not sure. |

What type of body is yours? If there is enough room to get some of that webbing in between, it wouldn't hurt. |

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
The sides of a 34 the inner guard only touches in a few spots, two ! then the triangle I tend to think that they had square's of the tape at these contact points only ,so that's six square's on each side ,If in doubt put the tape on ,running boards ect .you will have a squeak free car ,Ted

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
There are also canvas anti-squeak square pads used between various components such as:
- engine splash pan to frame - closed car windshield regulator to dash panel attachment - seat riser/track to floor These pads are also available from Roy Nacewics. As for anti-squeak pads used with the body fastens through the side of the frame I've never seen any used... Last edited by Steve Staysko; 01-20-2015 at 01:15 PM. |

Here's the Anty squeak on a original E pan .If its good to put this on here then its equally good to have it on the sides of the inner guards.Ted

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
Ted,
That pan is likely extremely rare as it is the first version of the left side '33 RHD V-8 pan. It was used when the motor mount insulator spacing was still 12" like the '32s. When that spacing was increased as an early running change in '33 most of the front of the pan was history. The photo below shows the right side LHD V-8 pan of the same vintage (with an extra hole). What is curious about your pan is the lack of a notch on the inner edge to clear the oil dipstick boss on the side of the oil pan. |

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
OK, today I pulled the fasteners at the B pillar and the fender well in a four door that I believe has never had the body off. The pillar area fasteners are 5/16-24 carriage bolts while the fender well fasteners are hex head. I did not pull the fastener at the dog leg since the inside hex nut was corroded and no longer a hex. In any event I found no evidence that any anti Squeak material in these areas ever existed. The web material on top of the frame was easily visible as was the material between the front inner fender wells and the frame. This is more of a gasket type of material, not a fabric. I'm putting together a 5 window and I believe the mountings were the same as the 4 door.
I tend to agree with Steve and BobH that these side mountings were metal to metal from the start. However, I get Ted's point and it might make sense to put a thin composite material in there anyway. Many thanks for all the input. |

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
David G Thanks for that ,I learn something every day ,I have maybe three of these not sure if they are the same ,
T Scott If Steve is right and Ford didn't put the anty squeak on the sides its maybe because of the body drop crumpling them up .? I pulled the original wood out of a roadster recently on the door shut wood there seem to be tape all the way were the wood made contact with the steel . |

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
I think the crumpling up could be a real issue since there is very little clearance to work with. The fender wells could probably be sprung a little bit at assembly to avoid the crumpling but the area around the B pillars is extremely rugged so it could prove quite difficult to get any material in there.

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
I don't have any engine splash pans, evidently they "went missing" on a lot of cars as they got older. I've never seen any on a 33 - 34 at a car show, but then there are very few stock ones around anyway.

Re: 33,34 anti squeak
The '34 V-8 pans are more frequently encountered and they are often confused with '33 pans as they are the same as the last version of the '33s except for being slightly shorter on the front ends. Unfortunately I'm away temporarily from photos of them.
