Default 1948 rear axle fitment to 1940

my 40 coupe has a worn rear . can I use a rear from a 46 to 48? I know the torgue tube and wishbones won't work but can I use the center and axle housings on my 40 thanks randy

46-48 rears are wider so the axles and bells are different.

You can use the center section. Axles, bells, and torque tube from your 40. You'll likely wind up with a good ratio of 3.78 x 1, an excellent all around gear ratio.

Lots of 46-48 came with 3.54's. Of course, there are also a lot of 4.11's out there. As noted, 46-48 is wider, so the advice on using your 40 bells & axles & TT is a good idea. If you try to use the 46-48 'as-is', look for tire clearance issues at fenders.

There won't be any issues with tire clearance. The later assembly is only about 3/4" wider than your '40.
You can install it but will need to place a 3/8" spacer between each radius rod and axle housing attachment point.

The 40 I put together for my dad came to me with a 46 or 47 already in it
I left it in ..... fits and works fine
