Default 1936 Wooden Strips Under Floor

A friend owns the '36 Coupe pictured below. Look at the two square, WOODEN strips that form a "V" directly outboard of the torque tube. They're definitely ancient........NOT of recent application.

A friend of a friend that is pretty-well versed on things "1936 Ford" said that these wooden strips were delivered on all 1936 closed cars, and possibly on open cars also. Does anyone have any more information as to what their purpose may have been, or any additional details? Subsequent picture examples anyone may have would be wonderful. DD

Yes, They are stiffeners added at the factory. They are called "Cleats".

There is an illustration in the EFV-8 Club's 1935-1936 Ford Book. Page 11.

I replaced mine with aluminum pieces. They should be real permanent.

They also have them on '35s. My '35 coupe has 4 of them. Two long ones under the main floor pan and two smaller ones under the rumble seat. They are stiffeners that prevent the "tin can" effect when weight is pressed down from above. I wouldn't be surprised if all original '35s and '36s have them.

The were added sometime during the '35 model year; my early coupe does not have them. I grabbed some off a '36 for patterns along with measuring the hole locations; but have not got around to them yet.

I also have an early '35 that did not have those wooden stiffeners under the floor pans.

Floor cleats or stiffeners were introduced in mid March of 1935. They were used on models 700, 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, and 770. In mid May of 1935 the design changed to allow the use of "T" or sleve nuts. In Early June the front cleats were modified to include a taper in the wood. From june on the design remained unchanged thru the end of 1936 model production.

To all of you who have responded with info and pics in this thread, it's much-appreciated. I'm not a '35-'36 guy, but after all these years looking under all these "old used cars", I never noticed these wooden pieces until now. Still learning something almost every day. Thanks for the replies, folks. DD

DD,
I would like to mention that mine had a thin strip of cork material between the wood and the metal floorboard. I would think that it is there to prevent squeeks.
