Default 1935 Ford Club Cabriolet

This was the first year for the five seat Club Cabriolet convertible! Can anyone tell me how to find out how many were made in 1935?

Fred, The Club Cabriolet was not introduced by Ford until mid 1936.

According to "The Classy Ford v8 " by Lorin Sorensen _ The 1936 Ford Club Cabriolet [ front and rear seat ] production was 4,616 - The 36 Roadster production was 3,862 ,and the 36 Ford Cabriolet [singe seat ] production was 14,068. The irony here was that Ford made the Club Cabriolet in 36, 37,and 38 then went to what would have been considered in previous years, a Cabriolet [ single seat ] for 39 with rumble seat, but called it a Deluxe Convertible Coupe. Then from 40 on all convertible were 2 seaters

Wisbangman, the Cabriolet and Roadster, both with rumble seats, preceded the Club Cabriolet. Last Roadster in '37, last Cabriolet (Convertible Coupe) in '39. The Ford Club Cabriolet became the Mercury Sport Convertible in '39. To further confuse things for you, the last Ford Convertible Sedan was '39, first and only Mercury Convertible Sedan was '40!

Now, did you say "irony"? The rumbleseat was re-introduced as an aftermarket accessory for the Ford Thunderbird!

Reason I am asking is I know of a 1935 Model 48 Club Cabriolet and on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia it states a new Club Cabriolet model was introduced with a fully framed windshield, I would like to know if this is true or did the first 1936 Club Cabriolet's come with 1935 front sheet metal and a Model 48 serial number tag?

Fred, even with al the inaccuracies found on the internet, you created yet another one yourself by misreading what you found. Please take another read of that Wiki, and you'll see your misunderstanding.

As for Wikipedia, I think if you seek Ford information, you should stick to the Fordbarn. There's more good info here in any one single week than Wiki has in total.

Thanks Alan! Do you have any thoughts on the 35 Club Cabriolet I was talking about with the model 48 serial number tag?

Fred, At the chance of offending any Wikipedia scholars, I present the following facts regarding the 1936 Ford Club Cabriolet.

1. The Club Cabriolet was announced to the Ford Dealers in early April, 1936 (see enclosed photo of announcement letter)

2. A brochure (Form 7429) came out in April 1936 to support promotion of this newly styled vehicle. (See enclosed)

3. Salesmen's Car Letter # 7 was sent out to further support the introduction and sales of this new style vehicle. (see enclosed)

In my numerous trips to The Benson Ford Archives and my research for The 1935-36 Ford Book, I have never found any reference to a 1935 Club Cabriolet or even a prototype version. If you have indeed seen a Club Cabriolet with 35 Front end sheet metal, I would guess that this vehicle started its life as a 36 model and the 35 fenders. hood/grille were added at a later date.

Fred, Listen to Don, do not listen to wikipedia, just don't!
Strangely enough, my 35 cabriolet was a sort of club cabriolet, but that was a modification done by the original owner (in Spain) as his family grew, by extending the cockpit back towards the rumble lid and putting in a seat, extending the top irons etc. whole thing was a bodge. First thing I did was to restore to the original proportions.
I know of two other cabriolets that had a rear seat fitted, one here in the UK and one in California, both were modified by owners, there maybe more home brewed versions and I suppose maybe the contributor to wikipedia saw one of them. I can't imagine anyone would retro fit a 36 club cabriolet with 35 fenders, hood, grille, running boards.
Gordon.

Thanks Gord, this one is in Canada so I will have to assume it's either a modified version or a 36 with a 35 nose!!

Fascinating reading as I am up to and maybe over my eyeballs in a restoration of a 1936 Club Cabriolet. My wife thinks that I have become obscessed with it and sadly I think that she probably is correct.

Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy obsession Bruce, we are all probably blessed with the same affliction. It would be nice to see photos of your 36 and of course your Canadian one Fred.

Hi 35Cab,
I'd be glad to send picture but it is totally dismantled. The cowl, a door and the rear quarters are the only pieces together. I should have something to show in 3-4 years. I have pieces everywhere including headlight glass under the master bed. Stay tuned!

Fred, I've heard rumors , fireside stories, and folklore about a "canadian '35 Cabriolet" but they were explained as " like the sasquatch , and women who understand men"..........we've heard they're out there but nobody's really seen one.

There was at least one good original 1936 Ford 5 pass. cabriolet in the Los Angeles area in 1966 when it was stolen from my rented storage area when I was in Vietnam.
