35 coupe roof insert
Wondering if anyboby had any experience with juliano's roof insert, and who might have the best out there. A fellow told me of a removable insert top, but could not remember where he see it, is there any such animal. Thanks again

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
I put one in my tudor. The biggest problem I had was they said to staple the canvas to the wood frame as original.. 35's have no wood. After talking to them they suggested cutting plywood to fit in the channel and staple to that. I didnt like that idea at all so I bought a rubber strip from Dick Sporado that is pressed into the channel to hold an original type top. I used it to hold the canvas down, then put on the padding and then the top material which was held by a n aluminum track pop riveted to the roof as they suggest, Ended up with a nice job. I experimented with some different top padding - thicker - firmer, but I ended up using the one they sent. Haven't had it out in rain but I'm confidant it wont leak and it looks great.

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
the Julianos looks good but sticks up a bit more than the original, I have not installed one or seen the instructions. If they want the upper trim to be pop riveted to the roof, I would not do that!
If you decide to go more original save the original upper trim if possible because the reproduction trim is very hard to bend to get the correct corners. The biggest problem is getting this upper trim bent. Some that have done it suggest using a wood "shoe" as a pattern and bend the trim into the shoe. I have not heard of a removable soft top, but it could be done, if your looking for a moon or sun roof why not. Mac's offers the soft top parts as well as LeBaron Bonney |

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
I looked into a fabric roof that would slide open - cant remember the company name. Thought it would look sorta stock and yet be "trick" when open. But I worried how water tight it would be and when I checked the price I ruled it out. Think they refer to them as "ragtops"

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
Here's a different alternative.
I make a fiberglass roof "oversert". I call it an "oversert" rather than an "insert" because it lays on top of the roof opening. It is 1/8 thick and gets glued to the standard rubber gasket in the roof opening. I use a "Trimlok" garnish that goes around the entire edge of the roof or it can be sanded smoothe and looks ok. The oversert has a slightly rounded shape (higher in the middle) to promote water runoff. Again, no cutting of the sheet metal like you'd have to do with a weld in metal insert. It can always be retro fitted back to original. Not any good for a show car but street roders like it because it can support a sunroof. I have a mold that I made for my 36 5 window coupe. It takes me about a week to lay up the fiberglass. I make one up for you and sell it for $250 plus freight. |

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
Someone welded the roof in on my 33 coupe. I can't find the metal strip that goes around the roof to finish it. Until I do find the strip I can't show the car. <a href="http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/b...nt=33Ford1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...07/33Ford1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
I've installed three Juliano tops. None have leaked and one is over 15 years old and been through plenty of rain.

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
I had a friend who put a sun roof in a '36 coupe. He cut a contour pattern, in a 2x4 and went to many junk yards and finally found one the same size. I don't know what it was that he found and he is dead now. It can be done.

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
I really dont know why it leaks. Only one spot in left front corner. The way the car sets water puddles in the 2 front corners. I got some butyl caulk stuff. I think I'm going to run a thin bead around the inside of the trim molding in that corner and see if I get lucky.

Re: 35 coupe roof insert
alright time to revisit this thread Looking to have a stock looking insert in a 34 Tudor that I can remove. Fiberglass base insert covered in Vinal with some sort of fasteners on the underside? Any thoughts as my kid (3 yrs old) really likes it with no top. Not to worried about the rain as I don't think I'll be doing much rain day commuting.
Thanks all!! |
