Default 36 flat top coil condenser

I have been having a hard time finding a late 36 flat top coil condenser. - I bought a 37 to 40 with the ground strap soldered to the side of the body and de-soldered it and resoldered it to the but end like the original.

a couple of questions :

- can/ should you solder on a condenser ? if so how hot ?
- these aftermarket condensers seem like junk - should the center screw
terminal be able to spin - I would bet "NO" - right out of the box -
spinning
- Does anyone have a good setup for these flat top distributors for a high quality condenser ?

i was told to talk to Tubman - but I cant PM him ! - I dont have enough posts

appreciate the help

Chris

Yes it is possible to solder a ground to the body of the condenser as you have done in your photo. Do clean the plating off the body before soldering. No the center screw terminal should not turn if it does the condenser is bad.

Thanks Terry,

this one has the spinnning terminal and wont register any Micro Farad's - but I will try with one of the NAPA IH 200 's I have ordered.

hoperfully I will get a solid reliable condenser and a "stock" appearance.

If you want a correct condenser, I have them NOS # 68-12300 for the flat top 1936 coils. Made in the USA 40 years ago.
They have been tested on a SUN condenser tester.

I just foind a bag of good used vertex magneto condensors at .036 mfds ... send me you address and i will donate a few to your project ( have them new for 32 each) I have never seen a bad vertex condensor !!! you just use your oem mount and slip the vertex into case and solder the very last condensor you will ever need .........
