Has anyone one replaced the original air tube system and gauge with a modern float system? If so did you install a float from the top or bottom of the tank. I know its not original.
My original fuel gauge is rusted out. I could just make up a wooden stick to check the tank, but would like a guge.

I don't know if its relevant to your situation, but I bought a new replacement tank from Tank's Inc. It has a modern float type pickup in it and I use a SW gauge in the dash. My truck did not come with an original tank, so I don't know if my new tank is any different in design. My new tank has the sending unit in the top.
I would think if your fuel line has suction that the newer system should work.

I replaced the original 1934 hydrostatic sending unit with a modern sender from Autometer and installed an electric gauge in the dash. When the guys at Limeworks installed the new sender they added a tube for the fuel pickup and redrilled the mounting plate so the original '34 pickup tank holes could be used. Here is a (fuzzy) picture slowing how neat this approach is. Also shown is the electric fuel pump on the frame. Since I let the truck sit for weeks sometimes it sure is gratifying to hear that pump and know I don't have to crank for long periods or use starting fluid.

Would be a pickup with the tank at the rear. Big truck had tank under the seat.

My truck is a big truck aka 1 1/2 ton. So you sit on top of the tank.

For those that have replied, thanks. You have given me more ideas to check out.

By the way, I have 2 BB trucks. A 1933 and a 1934 both have the long wheel base and both are original. I have kept them the same as if they just came off the job. One has a 59AB engine that replaced a worn out 34 V8.
