Wheel nut O/D
Hi. We were looking at the wheel nuts in our 32 with 16" solid 46 style rims and the std. Ford wheel nuts of 13/16 OD seem to go too deep into the rim recess for the nut, all wheels seem the same and the rim hole does not appear excessively worn. The concern is that the nut will bottom out before full torque is achieved.
Is there another nut available with a larger taper or larger OD than 13/16. |

I think I've seen in a catalog somewhere that they sell conical washers for situations like you think you have.

I see summit sells some with a 1/2" nuts with a 1" hex but the taper is 45 degrees and according to information original steel wheel need a 60 degree taper.

Re: Wheel nut O/D
Can you simply face off a 'smidge' from the bottom [smallest end] of the nut if you think it will bottom out?

Re: Wheel nut O/D
No would never do that!! Well only on the previous car we built had a similar issue so my portable mill was brought into action ( angle grinder.) to relieve each nut some so not to exact a cut.
Was just at the engineers getting some work done and he commented on nut seating. I would like to find a better professional solution. Still if all else fails the portable mill will be pressed into service again. |

Re: Wheel nut O/D
The washers on Amazon look right ,60 degree taper on top but the bottom says " ball taper"
Can someone enlighten me as to what a ball taper is. |

Re: Wheel nut O/D
Here are the conical washers I bought March 11,2016 from the same vendor.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-72-Ford...item51c9e0bf02 I bought them to prevent wear on my lugnut holes. I used them on 1950 Ford pickup wheels but they will fit other years as well. My lugnuts are 13/16 with 1/2-20 threads. They are still working just fine. Hope this helps. Last edited by 19Fordy; 10-29-2016 at 04:35 PM. |
