I am thinking of purchasing a 48 Ford truck and would like to verify the VIN to make sure it has a clear title. I found a plate on the Rt side of the firewall but it appears to be blank. I also noticed previous posts that show large numbers and letters stamped directly to the firewall. Is this the number that would be registered with the hwy department? Are the numbers elsewhere on the vehicle? Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

There should also be a plate on the inside of the glove box door that will have the VIN # on it.

I have checked inside the glove box and did not see anything. Is it on the door or inside or around the glove box

The serial # will be stamped on the frame rail,I think it was stamped above the steering box on the left side on the 48,on the 49 and later it is on the right side by the motor mount.The 48 may also be stamped on the right side. John

I agree with 33cabriolet that has been my experience. Look along the whole top rail may be closer to the shock mount.

The F-1 serial numbers are on the top of the right frame rail near the front crossmember. Most states require the frame number for registration.

The large numbers stamped on the firewall are the production code. My two 48's have the vin located where TJ indicated. The right frame rail is from inside as you sit on the seat.

The number you're looking for will something be 88RC 123456 or 87HC 123456

The frame number is usually lightly stamped so spend some time scrubbing the frame with steel wool, then shine a light at a flat angle to make the characters show.
