Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
Well, I'm not that well versed in transmissions so I apologize if this is a dumb question.
Do I need to replace my main drive gear since it has half a tooth broken off? All other teeth are good. |

YES! YES! YES! The gear has been compromised and will, without question, come apart further.

Check your cluster gear that mates with it.

Re: Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
I probably should pull my trans next winter. When I changed all the fluids upon first getting my 36 Fordoor in 2011 a piece of gear came out of the trans. I get a little grind when shifting to 2nd periodically......sometimes to 3rd and sometimes back to 1st at a stoplight. A good winter project I guess.

Adjusting the free play for your clutch petal should cure the grind. Bruce

Bruce, I checked the free play, it was ok. It doesn't grind on every shift, I'd say about 25% of the time. Thanks for your input.

Re: Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
Worry worry worry,,, yes it may break apart some more, but the important thing here is " TOOTH COUNT " ,, count the teeth on the input gear and match the new one to it, yes it do make a differance, with some of the bright people here on the barn, responding and no one said to count the teeth ... go figure ....OLD....BILL

Re: Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
Tooth count is an obvious "given" for everyone that understands the "Rule of 44". DD

Replace the bearing, as well. If it has seals on both sides, as some do, remove the tin on the inside face before installation.

Re: Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
Talked a lot with Mac Vanpelt. Found out the teeth in mine were 29 and 15 rather than
the "normal" 28 and 16... (49 Merc 3 speed w/ OD). I will be replacing with a 15 tooth MDG and keeping the 29 tooth cluster gear. If bearing is good w/o any grabbing, grinding or free play should I still replace it? How do you know if they are bad if they aren't "obviously" bad? Also, fill the new kid in... what's the "Rule of 44"? |

Re: Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
I think it's referencing total tooth count should be 44
29 + 15 28 + 16 |

Re: Broken tooth on main drive gear - replace?
15T Input + 29T Cluster=44, 16 + 28=44, 18 + 26=44
Just a bit info for trans guys. Paul J. |
