Help with pricing a 1928 Phaeton for sale
Hello all,
I may have been to vague in my initial posting so I retitled it and copied original below. Thanks for any help. I am in the process of selling my 1928 Ford Model A Phaeton and am looking for some help on pricing. My father and I bought it back in the mid seventies and performed a partial restoration. It was running up until around the mid 80's and was properly mothballed at that time and has been in storage since. It would likely require a full restoration. The engine had been rebuilt at that time. A partial description: very little body rust, missing the front door sills but all other body parts complete, upholstery torn in places and in need of redo, all body parts complete including top mechanism (no canvass), all bright parts re-chromed at one time but in need of re-chroming, exterior paint in fair condition in original dark blue with black fenders. Overall mechanically sound, fairly rust free, but in need of full cosmetic restoration. Any advice or interest would be greatly appreciated. The car is presently garaged in New Orleans and I have photos I could post or send to interested individuals. Thanks very much for any help, Rogers Schupp |

Re: Help with pricing a 1928 Phaeton for sale
Without photos or a bit more detail, this is real tough.
A low of 6000 to a high of 10000. not a good answer, but difficult to access what one can't really see.... |

Check out comparable one's on eBay and research what they actually sold for. This might give you an idea.

If you think it 'just needs a little tinkering' to get it running - then YOU do the tinkering. Anything that is not running has to be assumed to be non-functioning and in need of a major rebuild, by any prudent buyer. It is really not a good idea to hope for any kind of accurate 'price guessing' by anyone who has not even seen the car. |

$2000 if it can be rolled onto a trailer and the buyer is local to you.

Here are a series of photos. Please ignore the paint chips, I did not have time to clean up prior to the photos. The car has been garaged since I have owned it. Thanks for all comments so far,

Does the car run? In the condition it is in if it runs I would say $5k-$6k. I've seen worse go for more believe it or not..

Holy cow, how early is that car? Notice the radiator shell. I see it has a front-mounted emergency brake but I sure would like to see the braking system and a few other things that appear to be later.

Re: Help with pricing a 1928 Phaeton for sale
That radiator shell threw me also.
The choke rod looks longer than the one on my 9-27-28 Phaeton. I would have to check it for bondo, rust on the frame, and incorrect parts, but so far it seems the prices given are low. I paid $5,700 for mine back in 1999 and it had a cracked head, worn steering balls, poor brakes, amature paint and upholstery and a bad bearing in the tranny, and I figure I was lucky to buy it for what I concidered about half price. |

I'm with this one, $5-6K or maybe a little more. It needs a restoration but I think you could drive it while you're doing some of the upgrades.

Re: Help with pricing a 1928 Phaeton for sale
Do you have a clear title that matches the number on the engine?
What is the number on the engine? Does it have a date stamped into the firewall/gas tank?

Re: Help with pricing a 1928 Phaeton for sale
Howdy Roger,
First, that is a real nice looking "A". Second, in real estate they say 'Location, location, location!'. With Model A's I believe that much of the price is determined by the condition of the sheet metal, body style and completeness. The body looks to be pretty solid and straight. I would rather buy a car with good sheet metal and a bad engine than one with a bad body and a good engine. Anything in regards to the chassis, axles and engine can be replaced a lot cheaper than paying a body man full price. Frame/engine numbers, history, previous work done, etc. are nice but a complete, solid car and one that runs is particularly nice. Without a hundred pictures or a half hour with the car it is hard to put a price on but Phaetons can be rather desirable so I would put a price of $6,500 plus/minus $1,000 on it. From where I sit the body looks that good. Dean |

Get this going and put a top on it and sell it the the guy from Denmark who wants to bash across USA in an original car. He seems to be looking at that price range of 5 to 6 K. |

Re: Help with pricing a 1928 Phaeton for sale
My '28 Pheaton wasn't 1/2 that good to start with and I paid $4500 several years ago. I was happy to get it at that price. There are not all that many pheatons around and that one looks pretty solid and complete I think the prices mentioned here are low. You got to find the right buyer, but he will be willing to pay for it. If you want to sell it I would clean it, maybe get running and post on eBay and see where it goes.
