Check out this 1956 Mercury Two-Door Station Wagon, one year before they were offered my Mercury? For 1955 and 1956, Mercury shared the same Station Wagon bodies as the Fords. |

Re: Two-Door Ford and Mercury Wagons
Interesting side window treatment. Looks almost factory in the photos. Wonder how they trimmed the inside and if they leak?

Re: Two-Door Ford and Mercury Wagons
- COME TO FIND OUT - There was no 56 MERC 2DR SW. That wasn't released until the 1957 MODEL YEAR. Both vehicles shown in POSTS #666 and #667 above show a 56 FORD 2DR SW modified as MERC. The first wagon is clearly customized (door glass frame modified to appear as CHEV NOMAD) where as 2nd photo shows a sneaky OEM appearing conversion (it was done nicely). The FORD SW carried a BODY CODE of 59 for the 2DR and 79 for the 4DR. MERC only lists three trim levels (1956) and all are shown as 79. My apologies and THANX! to mercman for catching this ...

Distinct Bulge on rear quarters on 1955 and 1956 Mercury Sedans, Hardtops and Convertibles - missing on Station Wagons. |

Ford Station Wagon Body used by Mercury in 1955 and 1956. Notice that there is no bulging body work on the rear door? Compare this photo of a 55 Wagon with the above photo. |

Re: Two-Door Ford and Mercury Wagons
As KULTULZ said in Post 669, the 1956 Mercury Station Wagons were offered in three trim levels.
Monterey (with Simulated Wood Paneling) - 9 Passenger. Custom Commuter Station Wagons - 6 and 9 Passenger models. What is very unusual is that the top model with Simulated Wood Paneling was not in the Montclair series, but in the more economical Monterey series? In 1957, the Wagon with the Simulated Wood Paneling got a new name, Colony Park. The 1957 Mercury Station Wagons were available in 3 Series with 6 models to chose from. |

There was no Commuter wagon until 1957. '55 and '56 were either Custom or Monterey wagons. Sal |

Re: Two-Door Ford and Mercury Wagons
So if there wasn't a bulge on the side of the Merc's, where did that chrome 'vent' come from? Another model car? I've never seen one, so I don't know.

It says Custom on the front fender. Looks like a standrd Custom wagon from a trim standpoint. Brochures are usually released before production starts, so wonder if it was palanned, but never released. My Encyclopedia of American Cars doesn't list a Commuter until 1957. It's never failed me before. I guess I'm not sure either way now. Sal |

Re: Two-Door Ford and Mercury Wagons
Hi Sal, The above picture is from the dedicated 1956 Mercury Station Wagon Brochure. The regular Brochure that lists all body styles does not mention the word Commuter. Judging by this, I believe that the Wagon Brochure would have been issued later in the model year, as a foretaste of them offering a Commuter wagon in 1957. Just my thoughts?

Re: Two-Door Ford and Mercury Wagons
scicala, That Chrome Vent to are referring to is obvious a much flatter one made especially for the Wagons to try and duplicate the same look as the other models. That is my thoughts, as I have net seen a 1956 Mercury Station Wagon in the flesh. Regards Mercman <><

My feeling is that the brochure isn't correct. Maybe was intended for '56 at one time. Who knows. Sal |
